There was a story, years ago, about a guy doing some plumbing. he made out his lost and went to the local hardware store ( you do remember them), and explained to the old guy what he was doing. The old guy filled a bag with all the stuff on the lust, and as he was ringing up the sale, he said, " See you in a little while". The DIYer said, "Why, did I forget something?" The old-timer said, " No, you list was quite complete, but every DIY plumbing job requires three trips to the hardware store." DIYer smiled at the old man and left.
An hour later the DIY returned to the hardware store for an additional item. The old timer just smiled, and said, " One more trip".

The DIYer did NOT return to the hardware store any more that day....the third trip was to another hardware store.
All DIY plumbing jobs require AT LEAST Three trips to the store. Its a LAW.

Apparently so. At least if you go to a real hardware store there's somebody there who knows pretty much what you need and which things work with which other things. If nothing else, they at least know where the items are in the store.

Occasionally, I will run into a Home Depot associate who actually KNOWS the "nuts and bolts" (pun intended) of a partuclar task, when questioned.

In all cases, it would be a retired older man or woman whose previous career hailed from the construction or trade industry.

Sure was handy being able to speak to an actual electrician when I needed to know how to connect my air compressor to the 220V junction box!

When I put in a new sink, I attached everything to the sink before dropping it into the hole in the counter. It's a total PITA to do anything up in back otherwise!

I only managed to get to two of the four clips I was supposed to use - but I think the sink would have been fine with none after the plumber's putty I applied around the rim set up.

I attached everything except the disposal. That wasn't hard to hook up. The damned clips were a real PITA, though. I had 12 of them and manged to use all but one.

A few years ago, I replaced a stainless steel bar sink with a brass-plated one (that I found collecting dust at the very top shelf at Lowes for $20 including faucet!!!).

The install took about two hours. The job was lass difficult than a kitchen sink install for a number of reasons:

Sink is smaller and lighter...not as unwieldy to adjust and set as a kitchen sink (especially the porcelain ones!). Clips were easier to reach due to the smaller dimensions.

Cabinet area is far less cluttered...single vs. dual traps, no disposal unit and no dishwasher attachments.

There must be a subparagraph to that law that also requires it to be impossible to source all the parts, pieces or elements to complete the project at only ONE hardware store.

I work for a cabinet shop. We just did a kitchen and vanity replumb. 2 trips to HD. There's really no reason to go to the hardware store until the original setup is half dissassembled. We had to go back because the std vanity plumbing is 1 1/4" but this house had 1 1/2". So much for std.
