Here in Phoenix it's crazy! The illegal aliens around here will steal anything! ANYTHING and everything! They have been metal crazy since the prices have gone up. We have one of the worst car theft problems in the U.S. also! Build that fence faster!!!

Up here in Eau Claire, the cops busted at least three prominent scrap yards for acquiring copper wire...

Their "sting" was to take a roll of "clean" copper wire (still on the spool and labled with the owners tags and such) and bring it into the yards...

One yard wouldn't take it unless it was off the roll and any ID information was removed...

Needless to say, all the yards had various degrees of "stink" on 'em...

And...lots of copper was found after full search warrants were issued and executed.

At my studio, we leave whatever steel scrap we don't want outside the back door, and it's never there for more than an hour before the meth heads come pick it up. No illegals.

Meth heads & heroin junkies are the thieves around here, too. And the occasional murder like this torso found in floating down the bayou in a duct-taped shut ice chest. Duct tape is versatile.

Illegal aliens around here are in the construction trades, holding housing prices down, I guess. These are not permanent illegals. Most of them sneak in to work their asses off a few years and then go back home in convoys of pickups towing a car, both stuffed with appliances and clothing.

The willingness of people to cannibalize their neighborhoods just to support themselves is a sign of dire times. We all know that theft of all kinds of metals from aluminum roadway fixtures to literally miles of copper wiring to pipes from abandoned houses waiting foreclosure to catalytic converters from underside of motor vehicles are all at an all time high. To attribute this kind of behavior to drug users or illegal aliens is a misunderstanding and a misdirection of the problems. There are vast numbers of people poor enough to feel they have no other easy recourse. There are also lots of people who see these kinds of thefts for what they are: easy money.

Drug users are a minor issue. Poverty is overwhelming.
