My father has other interests outside of work, especially boating and camping, so he's actually looking forward to retirement. It would have been last year but he figured with the economy being what it was he'd work another year full time, then work half a year next winter and fade into the sunset after that. He's had a number of friends and acquaintences in his age group (early 60's) succumb to a number of health issues in the recent years and realized he wanted to enjoy himself a bit.

A head injury from a fall is what did in my stepmother earlier this year.

I'm sending my best wishes for your sister's boyfriend and your sales rep as well.
But I'm really writing to talk about strokes. I'm a first responder through my work (not a full time medical person) and we had specific training on stroke recognition and appropriate action. Strokes are apparently very easy for anyone to diagnose. And they are very treatable if the victim gets prompt medical attention. If they can be transported to an emergency room in the first couple of hours, the odds are very good the doctors can administer clot busting drugs to minimize the stroke damage. The problem is greatly exacerbated if the vicitm denies they are experiencing a serious medical incident and they insist they'll fell better if they just lie down for a few hours. So I've sent the following to plenty of loved ones and pleaded with them to commit it to memory as well as print a copy and post it on their fridge: STROKE RECOGNITION 1. ASK THE PERSON TO SMILE BROADLY. IF THEIR SMILE IS NOT SYMMETRICAL, THEY MAY BE HAVING A STROKE. 2. ASK THE PERSON TO RAISE BOTH ARMS TO THE SIDES AND ABOVE THEIR HEAD (like they are going to fly). IF ONE ARM TENDS TO SAG OR DROOP, THEY MAY BE HAVING A STROKE. 3. ASK THE PERSON TO REPEAT A SIMPLE SENTENCE (E.G. "The sun is shining brightly today."). IF THEY HAVE PROBLEMS ENUNCIATING, THEY MAY BE HAVING A STROKE. I'm calling 9-1-1 if I see any of these signs.

Upate on my sis' BF-The docs are very pleased with his progress. He's doing as well as he could be given his situation. Still being kept in a coma though. They are going to do an operation to stick some O2 sensors in to monitor the levels in his brain to make sure he's getting enough. It's a rare and new procedure that's had some great results (Done about 50 times in this country so far, first one at NW Memorial). Docs are flying in from all over the country to take part and observe so he's got a lot of people keeping tabs on him.
I've got my fingers crossed!
