Bittersweet Weekend

The Father's Day related functions were great. Dinner Saturday at the German joint was fun and raucus as usual. New England clambake at my parent's yesterday was great. It was overcast all day but never rained so we spent the afternoon around the patio while my and my brother's kids tore up the backyard.

Then we got word that my sister's (in Chicago) long-time boyfriend fell while attempting to climb up to their back porch window because they had locked themselves out of the house after going for a walk with their dog. I don't know how far up he got before he fell since she was at the front of the house. He was unconcious, broke both ankles and sustained a head injury. They performed surgery last night to relieve the pressure on his brain and will him in a drug-induced coma for a week to let things heal on their own. Initial scans are promising and he did respond to pain but that's all they can say for now until the swelling goes down.

Then I got a call early this morning from a customer wanting to confirm news through the grapevine that our top salesman had suffered a stroke. It was the first I had heard of it and haven't been able to confirm or deny if he had and how severe. He's in his 70's.

Talk about a roller coaster ride.

Life has a way of throwing us curveballs.....sometimes when we are having a really good time too.

I have known several folks who have had head injurys like that and had the coma induced and usually they came out of it in good shape.

Hang in there swamp!

Sorry to hear about that. I hope everything turns out well once the swelling is reduced.

That sucks. I hope they are both okay.

A friend's daughter found out the day she was graduating from HS that her dad has cancer. It really blows when you have a special occassion in your life that is typically very happy, only to have some tragedy strike at the same time.

A co-worker of mine may have suffered a stroke this weekend. I havent heard back yet to see. This guy is only 29 years old though. More like a child. He never takes care of himself. I have never seen someone with diabetes eat so much candy and sodas.

I know a few people like your friend. It's like commiting suicide, slowly.

Thanks guys. His parents finally arrived from KS this morning, they had a tough time with detours with all of the flooding in the mid-West. My sister was finally able to go in and see him since his parents were there to permit her to go in (since they're not married). Although the docs would always give her all the updates on him as they came about so that she could let his parents know.

He and my sister are definitely the free-spirited types, moreso in the frontier mentality even though they live in a large city. But he takes care of my sister and is great with my kids when they visit.

Do you have to prove you're married to somebody to be able to see them in the hospital like that? I didn't know that.

It's probably one of those deals where if she had just said she was his wife that would have sufficed since there was no way they could confirm it. Due to medical confidentiality matters I'm sure, spouse or family members are the only ones (usually) allowed to go in the room with the patient.

Yeah, maybe that's all because of all these HIPPA regulations they have now. I would have just lied and said I was the spouse. If I have somebody that is not blood-related or married to me on my advance medical directive, I assume that would give them the same rights. What say any of you lawyers?

On the salesman front, the stroke appears to be have been very mild and his wife called 9-1-1 right away. He says he actually feels fine but can't discern hot from cold. He should be released tomorrow morning. Sales aside, he is a great guy in his mid 70's who loves his job. He gets to hit the golf courses on the Rhode Island coast, Cape Cod, Fisher's Island, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket all while fishing and playing golf in between. We've been well prepared for his retirement for a couple years now since we knew he was getting ready to buy his retirement fishing boat.

Well, I hope he gets to enjoy his retirement and that boat. You can't always be putting things like that off until "tomorrow."

My dad died less that six months before he was to have retired. I vowed that I would not follow his example.
