Trying to fix Ford cruise control, any ideas?

This is on a 1995 Mercury Sable (Ford Taurus). Are there any schematics on line anywhere? Has anyone worked on one? It has a vacuum powered actuator. But I am thinking maybe a brake switch or something.

OK I found a schematic. So I guess I just want any tribal knowledge if anyone has any on this. Looks like it could be the actuator or a thing called a purge valve. Among other things...

1. Does your horn work

2. Have you had the cruise control recall done?

Does any cruise indicator light up on the dash when you turn it on? Check the switch on the brake pedal. IIRC, Ford uses a press fit switch that adjusts by sliding back and forth in a collar. The switch may be accidentally shifted by a foot that happens to get up under the dash or if someone pulls up on the pedal for any reason.

Hi,

Thanks for the excellent replies. I will try those out tonight along with some other testing of the actuator hopefully, if necessary. Yes I own the Benz, but it is in the shop so I am borrowing my friends extra car. It has a broken cruise so I thought I would try to return the car in better condition than I got it. Of course I already washed off and vacuumed about 10# of dirt... I will report back on what I find with the tests suggested.

Thanks

1. We don't use horns in Seattle!! They die from non use. He says the horn works but I will test it.

2. Recall? Recall??? He says he never heard about a recall. He bought it from his friend who was the original owner.

Yeah. You could buy mine, but then you'd have to fix the cruise control on that too!

I just looked for recalls on Chilton and there is nothing for the cruise control that I can find. Do you know of one?

You are the winner. There is a thing called a "dump valve". It is a valve at the brake pedal that releases the vacuum when you press on the brake. It does not slide on a collar as far as I could see, it just sits there. However it is in the location you said and did pop out of place. So everyone was right. I thought it was something to do with a brake switch and it was sort of. My friend guessed vacuum leak and he was also technically correct.
Thanks everyone. Now if you can tell me how to fix the speedo which bounces, makes noise and reads about 20% high.
