Station Wagons

Why have they seem to have gone by the wayside. I think it is wrong that people buy these little suvs that have less rooom then a wagon and get worse milage. I have had three Volvo wagons over the years and they have been great. It seem like people don't want to be seen in a wagon, so they buy the most compromising vehicle that they can. I actually think that the MB wagons as well as the Volvo Turobo wagons are quite nice.

I think the minivan kinda doomed them. After that, the SUV came along. Just evolved, I think. Personally, if I didn't have to tow, I might have bought one of them since they sit lower than my Excursion. I prefer to sit lower. OTOH, the Excursion has one great advantage. From up there, you can look down at the driver in the left side if it is summer and the girl looks hot.

On my recent visit to Europe, the Europeans definately "get it". From my perspective, I would say the 60 to 70% of the private vehicles are station wagons. If you think about it, why not buy a wagon over a car ? When I drive my TE, it is no different than driving the 400E, motor excluded of course, but I can't stuff an antique table in the back of the 400.

I agree. Much of my childhood was spent in station wagons. I was unaware that Subaru was bringing out a diesel wagon. Might be interesting to check it out.

I emailed Subaru USA a month or so back and asked about this. At the time, they said they had no timeline. One of the car magazines, I think, suggested a 2009 release for the 2010 model year.

Subraru's ad is misleading announcing "It's Here"

Wifey drives a wagon (Taurus) as the work beater to the parking lot of dings at UMC. She likes it

Wagons as new cars have faded, but the old ones are gaining in collector values.

I love old wagons and currently have two. I am restoring a 1972 Chevrolet Kingswood Estate 9-passenger wagon (which is the top of the line Caprice wagon) and I have a 1989 Pontiac Grand Safari 9-passenger wagon that I have owned since 1999 that I am selling for $900., because of space issues.

Here are photos of my wagons.... Hope to get the 72' on the road soon. Its been setting for years in a old womans garage.

I hope not for years because I just got a new 2008 Outback 2.5i gasser wagon, iwrock had been crowing about how good wagons were for years and finally I listened to him.

If I knew a diesel Boxer Outback was coming, though I would have waited to buy one.

They are selling them in England already. Jeremy Clarkson likes them.

Wagons are great. What else hauls a neighbor's cello to a concert with ease and still pulls 25 mpg or more, doing it?

Helping your neighbors out with your Outback Jim?

I made some pretty good sized dump runs this last week. The dump charges by the wagon load.... I got weighed for ****s and grins, and I hauled 1.5 tons to the dump.... That is $45 at metered pricing.... But because I am a wagon.... $15.... Awesomeness.

Jim, I bet if you compare the #'s for driving per mile, your gas outback will come out lower. We compared a 25 MPG gas W211 to the 35 MPG Diesel W211, and the gas car was lower because of the difference in fuel price....

I probibally will never give up my wagon.... Well maybe I will for an AMG Hammer Wagon or V70R.

I'm not a big wagon fan, I'm anti social so I don't want to bring anyone with me, and I hate "stuff" and carrying said "stuff". I need a car that is able to carry one other person once in awhile although I would usualy prefer not to carry them, and a fishing pole, golf clubs, and a 12 pack.

IMHO I'd buy an SL over a wagon or van, and everyone else can just walk. Besides you can fit like 4 people in an SL if you try...

Wagon lover here! European ones, that is, especially Volvo wagons, 240 and '98-'99 V70 in particular. Funny how growing up I hated wagons, mainly because we grew up with a Poniac wagon and my siblings and I thought wagons were the uncoolest cars ever. I still don't like American wagons. I don't know, seems like they just don't have the design right or something. Now, I'd gladly take a BMW wagon or a M-B wagon even though my friends and even family members don't like them (must be the way they look and perhaps the image too). Here's a pic of my '89 245 with iPd swaybars, Cherry Turbo strut brace, classic Virgo rims.
