Oh man, I learned Fortran IV and F-77 back in the day. Had to do it on punched cards! It was a great leap forward when we got 3278 terminals...

Death and taxes...there is yet a third certainty in life.
"Who's a nerd" discussions always start with boasting of technical importance and accomplishments, quickly progressing to a nostalgic trip down the hardware/software memory lane. You punch card veterans are so smug. Those of us who got our start on PDP-11's always laughed at you. Oh - and while I could rattle off a rather impressive list of credentials and accomplishments, they pale in comparison to one of my current duties...monitoring porn surfing. And since one can't always tell without performing a little investigation, the fact of the matter is...I get paid to look at boobies. |

The stated interest - ensuring compliance of workplace rules.
The unstated interest, likely of greater concern - preventing embarrassing FOIA requests. |

My HS was in the process of dumping the IBM card punch system and transitioning to the HP unit in 1980. It was cool running punch cards through the machine - it sounded like machinegun fire!
I thought the terminal system in college was great but when I was working on assignments, I would "submit a job" to the computer, then go wait in line for the ream of paper to come out of the printer to show the results. Only then, would I realize I had typed one character out of place and the whole program blew up... Dump the printout in the trash, back to the terminal to make more corrections and submit the job again. Sometimes I worked from home on a 300 baud modem and I had to wait until next morning to find out if my job completed successfully! People today, many times, don't realize how easy computer work is with the GUI!
