I found an MShop version for appliance repair, and they all seemed to recommend the Whirlpool Duet. My parents got one and so far so good.

Buy a good used Whirlpool or Kenmore (3-5 years old) from a person who must have "a new front loader".

It'll cost you about $125. and it will probably be running longer than the front loader............

I've got four excellent high line appliances now.............all for less than $700...........because people must have the new "stainless".

I love it.

Excellent feedback! Thanks much! After reviewing this, we’re looking at a front loader. The POS to be retired is a Maytag so we’re not going that way again.

The boss suggested a Samsung brand. Anyone familiar with these?

Mold issues

I've heard that some Maytag front loaders were having issues with getting the clothes moldy, but I can't imagine that happening unless you leave the wet clothes in there for a few days.

I checked these out and think they look really cool. Nice capacity too.
Take a close look at the design of the door seal. Some will retain water at the end of the cycle. This is probably where the mold comes from. If you have that design seal, the easy solution is to leave the door open when not in use so the water can evaporate.

Whirlpool/Frigidare Front Loader

Whirlpool/Frigidare Gallery series front loaders use 1/3rd the water of top loaders, have a comprable basket volume, don;t trash your clothes and are very durable. Low water useage qualifies for a rebate in some communities.

LG is also good, GE is not made by GE and has had some problems with electronic failures. New Steam Dry Cleaning uits have bad history of parts availability and trained repair people (its so new they haven;t had ample training in repair and diagnosis).

Miele is the Mercedes of Washers, $2600 for base model. But it will last years, is incredilby quiet and looks as good as a S500!

I second that emotion.

As stated before, Whirlpool makes Kenmore washers, and we had a Whirlpool washing machine for about 12 years. Worked perfect the whole time, but the wife and I decided we needed to trade it in a new Maytag Neptune. What a mistake. It's already broken twice.

Well, ye olde washing machine just went T.U.

Wife doesn't want a front loader, gotta be a top loader.

Looking at the online reviews, seems like most all of the top loaders are the same junque out of the same factory.

This should be a fun week.....

I sell commercial laundry equipment for a living. Front loaders are the way to go. They're much much more efficient, clean better, and pollute less. From personal experience I would recommend staying away from Maytag. Maytag washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, etc. are all crap! I have bought and replaced every friggin' one of them!

I think Whirlpool and GE are actually pretty decent machines for the money. There are a couple of European brands that are good (but expensive!) one of which is Bosch.

You are in MB forum so obviously you believe in German engineering. Why look elsewhere, get yourself a Miele, they are rated the best, from my personal experience Miele and Panasonic and BOSCH are the best brands you could buy.

http://miele.com/

Check out BOSCH as well

Panasonic doesnt' market their machines in US unfortunately.

Tell her that every time some one wants a top loader instead of a front loader, a puppy dies.

Or show her water and energy consumption figures...tell her buying a frontloader is ensuring potable water for your children living in the future.

If that doesn't work, tell her you had a dream, in which Al Gore himself, told you to buy a frontloader, or he would un-invent the internet just at your house.

I'm with you in theory on the front loaders, however space limitations make access for unloading difficult, so, we're off to look at top loaders tomorrow.

Will look at the GE and Whirlpool. I don't wanna meet the Maytag repairman....

Wish me luck......
