But can you be sure it cannot help you in another occasion coming tomorrow or the next day? If they knew you could be packing, the perps would have to think twice about trying anything. OTOH, if the odds are that you aren't, well, go call 911 and you MIGHT be able to get them to come take a report.

It's more "binary" than you think. There are two choices - you can choose to own a gun (choice #1) or you can choose NOT to own a gun (choice #2).
