I'd get a leather jacket with a light fleece lining, or something with Thinsulate.

I have a fleece lined Carhartt that I have had a few years, and it can be warm. Carhartt has also came out with a soft shell line of jackets that look like they are very warm, I think those go for around $120. I have a North Face soft shell I bought last winter, and it kept me warm as long as I had a sweater on underneath, and these were on days in the single digits. I just picked up another high end soft shell at a thrift store, and it looks like it will be warm as well.

I like Patagonia. Maybe not so great for work outside, but their gear lasts a long time (think Mercedes).
I have a Patagonia fleece lined jacket that I purchased in 1989. It's a little worn around the cuffs, but other than that looks great. For workwear, try Dickies.

I have had this one for about 5 years and I can strongly recommend it. Very warm and comfortable but also very light weight. And it launders perfectly, comes out looking like new with no pilling. I think it looks best in the Olive color. http://www.landsend.com/pp/ClassicSquallJacket~132235_59.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::ADB&CM_MERCH=IDX_00001__0000000043&origin=index
Patagonia is great also. I had a similar one of theirs for a long time. But it didn't launder quite as well. Both have a lifetime guarantee. LandsEnd probably a little less expensive.

Lands End Squall jacket. Perfect for what you are looking for. It is the most versatile jacket I own. Can't beat the price at $59.50 either.

This is the one I own, Synchilla: http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/product_focus.jsp?OPTION=PRODUCT_FOCUS_DISPLAY_HANDLER&catcode=MAIN_FA_US.CLOTHING_GEAR.MENS.JACKETS&style_color=28135-078&ws=
Similar to the Land's End, but much more expensive... all in the name, or?? ![]()

My Carhartt stuff has held up very well and it's been beat up pretty good. I've also got some L.L. Bean stuff, probably more of a New England thing, that I've had for more than 20 years and it still in good shape. Unfortunately a lot of the yuppies buy the stuff so they can appear "outdoorsy" but it is durable and they offer a lifetime replacement on most of their line (thanks in part to the yuppies who never wear the stuff enough to wear it out
![]() How warm do you need it to be? I've got some fleece pullover jackets I use for knocking around in cooler (not cold) weather and they're nice and light, pretty warm and cheap enough that I don't care if they get stained/ruined.

Thats a good question. I have worked on boats outside when the windchill was probably -5ish. 15-20 without. Thats miserable, nothing works, and after an hour or so your done. Plus your hands stop working.
I recomend staying inside if at all possible, when its that cold.
