How 'bout a nice, new Tata? Are they sold in the US yet? I believe they were supposed to be in the sub $3 range if I remember correctly.

Go ahead and make fun, but I am seriously tempted by this one myself.

It's the cousin to the w123 wagon with a w126 face.

Those engines love to eat headgaskets...every 80,000kms. Map sensors every 2 years or sooner. At least the parts are cheap...

What about Buick, Malibu, or Impala? Know any car dealers? My uncles friend is picking up damn near new ones for under $10k, at the dealer auctions.

I think he just got an 06 Impala with under 20k on it for $9k or something like that, I forget.

Honda is the way to go IMO. Unfortunately (or maybe not to some people) they tend to hold their value quite well over the years. You can find some for good deals though since there are so many out there (Accord or Civic). I have an 00 Accord DX (stripper model with manual locks, windows, cloth seats, etc) with 120K miles on it. Only problem it has had is it needed its brakes changed I have had its spark plugs and timing belt changed though.

It has quite a stiff chassis and is a safe car, and rides and handles much better than a W123.

It gets 28 mpg city/highway and 31 highway with AC on if you keep your speed at 70.

I went to the Honda dealer today. A Civic Coupe in the minimal LX trim (IIRC) with auto trans looked to be about the best deal. They had 3 08's on the lot, which the salesman said they would sell "at invoice". It came out to about $18,500 out the door with tax, tags, & title.
I saw several nice Accords, both 07's with under 10K miles, that looked real nice. The "special price" hanging on the rearview mirror was $18,500 before T,T,&T.
These all look like pretty decent options. I need to do more researching.
The Subaru dealer is next in line to visit.
My plan is to find as many close by good options, the revisit the stealers on the last day of the month offering instant payment in full.

Does it have to be new? It seems that one would get more for their money if they bought a gently used one.

C230 is the economy model. I get great mileage. I don't know why anyone would pay new price and then drive on the highway and get sandblasted with rocks etc. You can get my car now for about 5-6K. Pretty nice for the money.

2nd vote for the Yaris hatchback. 1 or 2 years old with less than 30k for sub $10k. Almost 40mpg.

A friend of mine had a scion xA, which is almost the same car- again, can be found for a good price.

Good luck.
