It's not so much that I detest the updates, what I detest, is that I can't put them on hold, when I am busy doing work, or initiate them on my own (and have it actually update). A few kb's doesn't bother me...it's the 12MB bombs that can wreck your mood.

At my new Purdue job the computer geeks are the best!

No matter what bonehead thing I do they can straighten it out without making fun of me!

Our laptops at my old job were all encrypted. Mine would take half an hour to boot up when it was connected to the network - and the updates would turn it into a brick on a regular basis. They finally replaced it (I made sure the new one was from the high end of Dell's Precision lineup), and I drove my car over the old one before handing it back to IS.

I'd put this thread on youtube but youtube is banned on our server, I don't think its a bad policy though if one person has it everyone will want it.

I do have special privileges for MBshop though, at first no thanks to the resident sociopath but thanks to the resident Mistress privileges were restored...fer business of course

Your welcome. No Youtube over here either and lots of sites have been deemed No access sites so I hardly click on any links at work anymore.

Back when I worked for someone else, I solved the problem easily. I told the IT folks to get their POS computer off my desk and used my own laptop for everything (usually from home). Anyone I actually needed to deal with had my personal e-mail, I simply ignored all the dilbert IT nonsense. I eventually got bored with the whole deal and quit.

Revenge of the IT corps. Pre-personal computer, they ruled the mainframes and dumb terminals of big organizations. Big budgets and nearly absolute power. Then personal computers started showing up, running VisiCalc and Wordstar for fractions of the cost. All those years of COBOL and FORTRAN down the tubes . . .

We just had a migration from one domain to another. Now, half of our equipment doesn't get recognized.
Another co-worker's machine won't give him admin rights to change his computer name (as per instructions). Supposedly they gave him admin rights a week ago (via a push) but it has yet to manifest itself.
Everytime something like this happens, I am reminded of Mr. Scott saying to McCoy... The more they mess with the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.
