It's going well, thanks. The house is great and we're finally all moved in and settled. New dining room furniture arrived last week. Wanna buy a vintage '60s china cabinet?
I do miss posting as often as I used to.... when I was single and spending evenings at home on the computer with you guys.... but I'm sure I'll have more time soon since the house is pretty much in order.

'Course I've gotta cut the grass this evening, then there's staining the 18'X35' deck, then theres painting the garage floor and re-doing the walls and shelves for all our garage stuff..... But we're having a blast!

You live in Reston? My sister lives there. Not too far off the Wheile Ave. Exit of the DTR. Bout a ten minute walk to the Town Center from her place.
She's been a VEEERRRRY strong proponent of the Dulles Rail Project.
She also eats eggs every day and has low cholesterol, fwiw, and to not hijack the thread.

Chad- It'll be o.k. it might take him a day to get back to you. In the mean time Google cholesteral(sp) and see if what it has about lowering it on your own....I actually shaved off 30 pts when I went on the Weight Watchers Diet.

This stuff is for real. The drug companies are trying to get it off the market because it works better than their stuff. The Mayo Clinic gives it an "A":

My ex went to the doctor (a regular western doctor) and he said her cholesterol was high and told her to take fish oil pills (Costco) and Red Rice Yeast (2 600 mg pills once a day at bedtime).

I plan to eat oatmeal every morning, get back into riding the stationary bike for 30 minutes everyday, and ELIMINATE ALL tasty grilled foods and see if my numbers go down. I guess I should avoid coffee too.

I hate taking pills of any kind and want to avoid taking a cholesterol pill for the rest of my life.
Ask for a retest. In the interim, deprive yourself of fatty food and eat oatmeal and exercise. If it's still high, take the drug.

Another vote for Red Yeast Rice here. Don't take the results lightly... Good luck getting it down.

On the oatmeal, buy non-instant oats; I like steel cut irish oats, but Quaker Oats from Akron aren't too bad. Just stay away from the instant garbage. I typically just prepare the normal oats as if they were instant- there is very little difference besides a bit more chewiness. Local Maple syrup (not Mrs. Butterworth's or other "pancake syrup" or "butter flavored syrup") or raw honey make the experience a bit more palatable.

Also, start hitting the fish oil capsules. Read about them, they're not all the same. Welcome to my daily routine!

Hang in there Chad. It's nothing to take lightly but it can be brought around. Lots of good advice already given on non-pharmaceutical help, I've been using a few myself and they have helped. I've also got the genetics thing to fight, but that's the draw a person gets I guess. Mine was not as high as yours but since I've been watching it with diet I do feel better as a nice side benefit and I've got about 10 years on you. If it has the same effect for you, as energetic as you are already you'll be able to completely rebuild a car in a weekend

We're with ya bud.

Chad,

Best wishes in you quest to get it lower. I don't have much to offer that has not been said by others. I do have a link to a health board that I read from time to time. I learned quite bit from this site after my MI & high cholesterol diagnosis 1 year ago. I think you have to join in order to post.
Check it out.

Steel cut oats at the health food store are about 89¢ lb. At least they were not too long ago. Besides local raw honey or maple syrup I like to sprinkle a little cinnamon and add fresh fruit. I use a coffee mill to grind flax seeds and sometimes add that or some wheat bran to the oatmeal. I don't know if that will help with cholesterol, but does make a tasty and hearty breakfast.
I also have potted stevia plants which I put out in the summer. Then just cut off foot length pieces before they start flowering and hang the cuttings upside down for winter use. The leaves will stiffen; just rub you hands around and reduce to small bits and use to sweeten oatmeal. Very sweet, no calories. I believe stevia is used in Brasil as a sweetener.

Thanks to those who posted on rice bran oil and red rice yeast.

Chad:
CVS sells a self-test cholesterol kit ($10? $20?). I never used it so I don't know how accurate it is but since you'll be getting your cholesterol checked by your doctor soon, it'll give you a chance to see whether the kit is in the ballpark. If it's reliable, then you can be doing some additional monitoring yourself. I believe it requires a pinprick for blood.

Chad,
I asked the significant other over the weekend (she's a physician and into holistic health but trained and works as a clinical physician/surgeon) about high cholesterol. She said that you should probably start with the medication along with doing all of the other things you mentioned and others mentioned. Then get restested after a couple months. If your level has dropped you can go off the medication, continue with the lifestyle changes, and see what happens.

She stated that the cholesterol meds are great. There are no side effects and they work well.

Good luck!
