Non Mercedes body work question

I have some dings and a nasty dent in my deloreans right rear quarter panel. Rather than shell out $1k for a new one I want to knock the dents out.

I've seen stuff like this done before and the body man had like some special hammers and metal bits

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=31277

will these suffice?

assist me lol

yah, those are good enough. Depending on the size of the dent use the square concaved hammer edge with a flat dolly. this will be the easiest for you a beginner to try to get the dent out. Hammers and Dollys are sort of a art form. The more you use them the better you know how to use each one to do the best job.

Bear in mine that it will have to be perfect when finished, as the Delorean is made of Stainless Steel, and doesn't get painted or filled with body filler. You will have a rough time hammering out those dents on SS.

A friend of mine had his shipped to DMC located in Bonita Springs, Florida because we couldn't get it perfect enough (and he owns a full service bodyshop!)

Contact information for DMC in Florida:

Stainless is going to be much harder to work with than regular steel. Go buy a j/y fender, beat it in and practice beating it out. IIRC, stainless likes to crack if you work it too much.

I've got DMC on speed dial.. no lie.. #6 on my phone Plus I was there two months ago
as always, the back of my head

this place is 3 blocks from my aunts house in bonita springs.. I had no idea it was there

I would rather try and get it as good as possible before I have someone else do it since this is like a serious budget restore(ha!).. plus I need something to do since I dont have much cash flow at the moment. For example I started to blend the entire car last night.

When the engine is in and the car is up and running I might spend the $700 plus $200 to ship it to dmc FL to have the car regrained. They charged $100 an hour to pull dents and my uber rare hood has... two small dings in it

But the entire cars grain is perfect except that one dinged panel. I could also bring it by the stainless shop and see how much they would charge to fix it since I bet they know what they are doing. I just want to do as much work as possible, ya know

Buy a sheet of this to practice on:
http://cgi.ebay.com/STAINLESS-STEEL-SHEET-074-x-12-x-12-3-BRUSHED-304_W0QQitemZ310051266055QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

What gauge is the SS on the DMC?

I understand ya!

FYI...the graining of the steel is done with course 3M Scotchbrite pads. i believe they are light brown in color. The hard part is keeping the grain straight!

Scotch brite 7446 pads.. I have 3

those are used for blending the grain.. cleaning etc..

graining is done by a special tool that spins at 1000 rpms and no higher with a flapper wheel and 80 grit paper.. One just went for $700 on ebay

Whatever you do PLEASE be careful. The DeLorean body panels are NOT solid stainless but rather a thin metal veneer backed by fiberglass.

Consult some of the experts in the club first before anything untoward happens.

Glad the camera is working out.You might try resetting the ASA film rating on the camera to compensate for a sluggish shutter, but I think with use it should get back to near spec.

Joe, if you can get that body back into shape without looking all beat up, you are the MAN! I will be interested in seeing your progress as you go along. That is quite a project.
