I'm going to strongly disagree with that one point. His color worked against him in many racist areas of the country. I'm not convinced that the 95% black vote offset this factor.

it scares me a little that Obama won by so little.

McCain touted himself as a maverick. which doesn't appeal to the base. couple that with his near identical votes with bush, and the choice of Palin and you get a campaign that didnt have a clear message or direction. Palin did appeal to the base, and the most base of the base as evidenced by the vitriol directed at Obama at some of her campaign stops, but she added nothing. the base would have voted republican anyway. she was supposed to bring in the christians but brought fear and doubt to anyone with half a brain.
now stir in the hate, lies and fear mongering and you essentially distance yourself from the uncommitteds.

the coup de grace was the tanking economy. for all intents and purposes, McCain was in the lead until Lehman Bros failed. and on the same day he said "the fundamentals of the economy were sound." at *that* point Obama surged into the lead.

cue misteps by McCains campaign and a near perfect run by Obama and the result is self evident.

Folks in the middle aren't so concerned with ideology, and tend to pick the more handsome person to be the president.

Not surprising...the Kerry-Bush election pretty much yielded the same poular vote results...it demonstrated that the country as a whole is pretty evenly polarized.

Agreed. That echoed GWB I's seemingly clueless statement about the economy when we were in that same predicament during his tenure.

After the long grind of a Presidential campaign, a Parliamentary system looks better and better, does it not?
