Is this far fetched or......
Do you think Obama won because he was actually running against Bush or McCain?
And please bring some humor to your comments as we could all use some positive jestering after the circus we all had been subjected to by these egomaniacal politicians. |

I think Obama won because he got the most votes, popular and electoral.
But thats just me. |

Of course he was running against Bush.
Couple that with Sarah Palin and an economy in the toilet and his margin of victory is extraordinarily narrow. The election was the Dems to lose..........and he didn't win by all that much. |

McCain got what he deserved, choosing that nut as his running mate.

I wonder how a John McCain/Condoleeza Rice ticket would have done?

McCain never really had a chance; consequently, I'm surprised he ended up with 46% of the vote. If the Dems had picked a better candidate, the "landslide" that the media was predicting would have happened. Bush was in office for too long, doing too much domestic damage, and all during a really crappy economy with a crappy future.

I am on the Repo mailing lists since I usually vote in the Rep primaries. The last two weeks we received four mailings from the Indiana Rep party and the US rep party. EVery last word on all four of them were about O, playing on fear, lightly veiled racial things, not a word about Mac at all.
These kind of starkly negative fear ads probably swayed a lot of undecided voters at the very end of the process. Our system is very very flawed.... But its the best system I know of. Based on the last four or five elections O won by a very large margin.

I'd like to see a shortened campaign to 60 days, with a cap on funds, and no precinct reporting until the polls close on the West Coast.

Besides all the good point raised thus far, he had the Clintons who are very popular, especially Bill campaigning for him.
Had Al Gore not tried to distance himself and ride Bill's popularity, we may have not had Bush II.... A repo running after Bush had little chance IMO, never mind adding that whack job to the ticket. A MCRice ticket would have fared better.

Obama picked the right time to run and emerged victorious due to the myriad of ills befitting the Republican Party.
Whether or not Republicans contributed to the serious problems we now face, the incumbent administration get the blame, especially if it's been two terms...folks wanted something different, even if untested. McCain was unsuccessful in distancing himself from the Bush administration...few were embracing his "Maverick" tag as he historically voted in favor of Bush's policies. Some saw McCain as really just a Bush "clone". His choice of a running mate (to gain youth and female empathy) didn't help, as Palin seemed highly unfit to take on that responsibility (should McCain be disposed for some reason). Aside from that, some will never sway from party loyalty, no matter who is running for office.

The ONLY reason he won, was because of the backlash against George Bush. Certainly not because he was qualified... Right time, right place, right party, right color. As the pendulum swings too far one way, one time, it will swing too far the OTHER way the next...
