Back in the 70s, I worked at a phone-interface company and one of the many calls we had to go out on was replacing the cords...starting at $50/10' cord, $75/25' cord plus service call charge ($25/hour) and drive time.

One gal had a 25' cord so knotted up, she could barely hang up the handset back into the receiver. That was back in the days when you have to dismantle the handset and remove and replace the whole cord and then take the phone itself apart and reattach all the wires in there too. Nothing was modular.

I still will take a handset off the receiver and de-tangle those wire-piles...I'm almost manic-OCD about it...
