I saw it from the plane on a trip to Alaska. We climbed a 5000 foot mountain there without ropes or anything. Got hit with a blizzard in the end of August while on the mountain, good times (not)

I went part way up.
It's the highest mountain in California, off Highway 395 east of the Sierras.
Back in 1987 or so, I stayed nearby, in Lone Pine, California at the Dow Villa hotel. Wonderful to watch a sunset over the Sierras from a hot tub; silly to be doing it all alone. I drove up it as far as you could go in a car. My 1982 Ford Crown Victoria, that I had back then, barely made it. You can't imagine driving a big V8 car like that on a level road, with the accellerator floored, and you are only going 20 mph!!!!!!! The air is very very thin up there, that's why.

We climbed up the East face and then walked down. That was sometime in '86 or '87 I think when it wasn't too crowded yet. It's not a bad hike if you're fitter than a naturally aspirated V8.
I haven't been back to the Sierras in awhile. From what I hear it's grown a lot. There's lots more to do up and down 395 these days. Even if you can't get a permit to do Whitney you should visit Death Valley, Mono Lake, the high country, etc. One of my favorite pastimes was peak bagging. You try to string as many peaks together in one day and sign your name in the register up top. Bring a small collapsible fishing pole. You can live off the trout in those high lakes.

I'm thinking of the upper Appalachian Trail for ’09 or ‘10. Might try to run (jog) the Little Devils Stairs and Buzzard Rocks in Typhoon XCRs if I can get someone to “haul-ahead” for me. I’ve heard a few have done that just for an added challenge. Anyone here with time on (near) the AT ?? - Shelby

My Mom and step-dad hiked up Whitney a couple of times when they were in their 60's..... They were savvy about altitude hiking.
Nasty windy barren places to camp along the way; bring your own fuel. Lack of sleep, headaches & Hardship is not my type of vacation.
