Japan, like many other countries has extremely strict rules governing the mechanical and physical condition of personal automobiles. You won't see "rust buckets" or "beaters." That winds up being a boon to recycle yards and scrap yards who send cargo ship loads of decent parts around SE Asia.

That would explain it. I thought it was more of an unwritten rule to keep your car nice, presentable and probably sterile too.

Those guys in the leather jackets parking their S600's on the side streets near the pachinko parlors had showroom clean cars...

Too bad they can't send any "beater" Skylines our way.
