Dvr for direct tv
OK, I am going crazy here. I cannot find an answer to a simple question on product reviews and so forth.
Situation: I have Direct TV with a Hughs receiver No connection to TV or internet What I want: I want a simple DVR that I can connect to my sat receiver and record shows while I am traveling. But I do not want any subscription to any service or anything like that. So what DVR can I get? I want to use it like the old time VHS Players that one programs the time and channel to record. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You will always have to pay a subscription for the satellite service. DirecTV should offer it's own brand of DVR that requires no additional subscription. I have a Dish Network DVR that I bought independantly off of ebay and it works perfectly.
The only others readily available are the series one Tivo units but they force you to pay monthly fee for the DVR capability. I believe there are also higher end DVR's that do not require a subscription but they cost much more up front. I would just look into a DirecTv DVR...

I have a DVR on 3 TV's in my house. I believe the first box is included and it's 4.95/month for each additional box from DirecTV. I needed to upgrade my connection to be able to record one channel while watching another. You need to incoming lines to do this.
I pay $80.15/month for all the channels (except the pay channels like HBO) on 4 TV's with a DVR on 3 of them.

Thanks for the input, but the issue, look at my location, is that I am in a grey area, I am fine with Direct TV, in that I pay them for it, but I am not where I should be according to them.....
So it is difficult to get the one from them and have it within the regular service

If you have a fast enough computer, a tuner card might be the best option. It lets you record TV onto your computer, and theres all kinds of software for scheduling it. You can get one for about $20 these days...

Heh, that is not a bad idea! Thanks for the tip. I have a not so old desktop that I do not use. I will check into hooking that up into the system.
Thanks

The TV Tuner Card will only record cable TV and Over the Air programming. It won't work with directv. The easiest way is to buy a Directv DVR used and have it activated. Shouldn't be a problem since you have an account. You can also get a slingbox to hook to it so you can watch on your laptop while on the road. If you need a Directv DVR, let me know. I have a couple laying around.
