Yeah, but if another private citizen had uttered the alleged slander AND been sued to boot, nobody here would have heard about it, and if so, likely not given a ****.

Here, everyone (except Tom W) seems against the (admitted weirdo) woman who happens to be a pop celebrity being able to have the same right to slander as Joe Nobody.

Well, at least it DOES indicate that one has good taste. If you can work on it yourself and keep it running for hundreds of thousands of miles, you're obviously no dummy. Also, if you participate in the many discussions on this forum, you're bound to be somewhat informed about things.

Back to the topic of the thread, as one somewhat familiar with the case having followed the HBO documentaries ("Paradise Lost", "Paradise Lost II") on the case, these men accused of this horrific crime are all obviously innocent, and the man accused by Maines has been implicated by DNA evidence as the real perpertrator. The men are also obviously unable to receive a fair trail in redneck Arkansas. The entire case is a scandal, and even if Maines loses, if it helps the plight of these unfortunate men, it will serve some good purpose. I would recommend to anyone interested in the case obtaining the two above mentioned films, which are available at any Blockbuster or via Netflix. You will be shocked at this grotesque miscarriage of justice. Maines deserves kudos for speaking the truth.

Let's look at it another way...

(JD, jump in ANY TIME...)

As soon as the press latches onto the meat of any case, it's extremely hard to find and seat an unbiased jury (and alternates).

Since the first three men went through the meat-grinder of justice without Maines involvment, doesn't the other gentleman (using the term loosely here) have the chance of expecting, at least, the same level of meat-grinder justice without the added publicity of some half-baked warbler declaring "...he's guilty of gawd-knows-whatever..." without any INVESTIGATIVE FACTS to back up whatever she's spouting?

Who, what or whatever allowed her to be the mouth-piece for the justice system in that area? Just because they had a concert booked within a 100 miles of the crime scene?

Why don't we just start a new reality show ... "Crooner Court on Tour" and feature some fringe-of-society performer(s) taking their road-show to every little bump-in-the-road, back-water Bumfawk, AK. town and re-open any half-baked trial that occurred within the last 15 months and put it on the air...

It'd give "Judge Judy" a run for her money and it would play well in the trailer-parks around the country!

Coming soon to your local FOX station! Stay tuned!!!

I agree with a lot of what you said in that post, except for this statement, which to me indicates you don't have much if any legal experience.

If she did it, and if he's innocent, then she should pay major Chick-Bucks. If she was just bustin' that Specter guy or some other Hollywood poopie-head I would buy popcorn for all. But going after a citizen? F*ck that.

Spector is not a citizen?

It certainly appears he is certifiable but what does being a citizen have to do with anything?

I admit she is a bit edgy but so is Clint Eastwood, as an example, and nobody is telling him to shut up.

Sorry, I didn't realize the Constitution differentiated Celebrities from Citizens like the common law does when the situation is reversed

Just tryin to keep you honest on that libertarian thingy

Don't think I haven't day-dreamed about the case: for instance, if the plaintiff is successful, and the Judge finds that say, Meanes (sp? I don't listen to them that I know of) intended to destroy the guy vs. merely expressing her opinion, then her net worth can be considered if a punitive damage instruction goes to the jury. Then go to precedent that 3x a Defendant's net worth is not excessive when awarding punitive damages Dude's either going to be found crazy, or find himself crazy rich.

BTW. a plaintiff seeking damages for "defamation" type infractions usually has an eye on the depths of the defendant's pockets.
