Even though I really need to have enough room for everyone to move around I haven't decided if I want to make that fuel consumption jump from 27'+ with small blocks to 32'+ with big blocks. 18-20 gals./hr. to 35-45 gal./hr. is a big leap!
Big blocks are nice though, my grandfathers 315 would cruise at 25-26 knots at 3,200 RPM. I remember when fuel was cheap, we used to run it almost WOT to Port Jeff for lunch or dinner. He didn't mind burning off a quick 40 or 50 gallons.

That boat is a Ray Hunt design, when it got rough out we could keep up with larger boats, like 36 or 38 SeaRay's.

A friend had a 26' Shamrock 260 Mackinaw with an inboard 351 Mercruiser. Great boat and easy to maintain. It also had a tunnel drive which came in handy while in shallow water. It was similar to this one...

I really like the design of the 31's, nice big open cockpit. In fact, I'd prefer one. Unfortunately due to my reproductivity cabin space and sleeping accommodations are as important as anything else.

BBs are great for pushing them along, not so much if you have to feed them. My fathers fuelie 454's use 45 gph at 18 kt cruise and he puts 70-80 hours of cruising on them in the summer. That's more than my wallet can handle! The 36's actually don't burn any more fuel, even though they're heavier and have larger cabins, since they don't "squat" quite as much.

I'm kind of afraid that we're going to get bit by the camping bug (trailer or rv) this summer. We're going to rent one and do some travelling over the summer and see how it goes. My parents have been bitten, so much so that they're downsizing the boat and upsizing their camper, although a good part of that is they're getting older and my mom is the primary deck hand and they don't want it to get to be too much to handle.

I'll always have a boat. It may just stay smaller with the funds diverted to some sort of camper.

Yeah camping is a blast at that age. My uncle is up at the RV show in your neck of the woods today looking at a MB Sprinter based RV. He doesn't want to get another bus, to big.

Those Sprinter set-ups are beautiful!

I'm thinking of heading over to the show either later tomorrow or early on Sunday so the snow can cut down on the attendance. The kids are free so that makes it an easy decision!

I won't buy new but I do want to check some layouts just to get an idea of what would work best for us. While I've brought my wife tent camping and she enjoyed it, she's far less excited at that prospect now and with kids. I'm torn between trailer and driveable. If we get a trailer I need to buy a Suburban or full-size van to tow it, which I'm not necessarily opposed to doing. If we go class A/C you have the extra mechanical maintenance issues and no wheels for exploring once you get where you are going (unless it were big enough to tow our minivan as a toad), but a lot more room and child-separating ability during travel.

My friend is getting serious about selling his 1999 35k mile Tahoe if you want a tow vehical.

Pop up's can be had cheap. My other uncle just bought one thats almost new for $3,500. Has AC and everything, nice little trailer.

Does it have a 3rd row seat? PM me some details if you get a chance, I might be for the right price.

My only issue with pop ups is having to climb over each other. If we had a normal sized family it wouldn't be a problem.

A Mercedes-Benz powered 3.0 V-6 turbodiesel coach is likely my next coach too. I am in major love with most aspects of them. The Winnebago brand offers the most floorplans/sleeping area configurations. Floorplan is key to satisfaction in ownership with a motorcoach. There are several brands now using the Dodge Sprinter MB-3.0 turbodiesel. The Winnebago paint jobs are especially attractive. Here's a honey of a Sprinter MB diesel on EBay, even incorporates a 3.2 kw diesel generator! -Instead of the usual propane-fueled genset. It's an '09 w/5,900 miles located in Rochester, NY. Listed for $111K. Buy it now price of $84,999.00.

Only wanted to respond to Hatterasguy, about the cool Class Cs he mentioned......since he mentioned the MB-engine-based Sprinter. -Not to hijack, Swamp.

Leave the jacking up to me! I've never met a thread I couldn't take on a completely different tangent.

I think it's due to the fact that if I were 30 years younger they'd tag me with ADHD!

I like the mobile office Sprinter conversions the most.

I was driven in one once (With upgraded parabolic leaf springs) It was rode quite smoothly and it was surprisingly quiet as well.
