Saudi clerics want women banned from TV, media
Tue Mar 24, 2:11 pm ET

RIYADH (AFP) – Hardline Saudi clerics have called on the government to ban women from appearing on television and to prohibit their images in print media, which they called a sign of growing "deviant thought."

In a letter to new Information Minister Abdul Aziz al-Khoja that appeared on websites this week, the 35 Islamic clerics also condemned the increase of music and dancing on television, as well as images of women in popular newspapers and magazines that they labelled "obscene."

"Our faith in you is great to carry out media reform, for we have seen how perversity is rooted in the ministry of information and culture, on television, radio, in the press, literary clubs, and book fairs," the letter said.

It cited an alleged plan to "westernise" Saudi women by "reducing their rights to a question of removing veils, wearing makeup and mixing with men."

It added that the ministry had permitted the import of "obscene newspapers and magazines that are filled with deviant thought and pictures of beautiful women on its covers and inside."

"There should be no Saudi woman on television, in any case," they said. "There is no doubt that this is religiously impermissible."

The clerics, including justice officials and academics from a conservative Islamic university, cited several cabinet-endorsed orders and policies from years past which they said supported their argument.

They appeared to be challenging a growing push for liberalisation of tough restrictions on women, including near-mandatory use of black, full-face veils, which are rooted in its ultra-conservative Wahhabi version of Islam. Both Saudi television and print media increasingly feature women, while Arabic-language magazines showing women in Western garb and makeup are also widely sold in the country.

The letter came in the wake of an information ministry-sponsored book fair in Riyadh in early March at which religious conservatives complained that men and women were allowed to mix freely, and that some books on sale violated Islamic principles.

The book fair was marred by the muttawam, or Islamic morality police, harassing a woman author promoting her book and trying to prevent men from obtaining her autograph.

Ya know, it is funny how even the crazy Mullahs in Iran don't try this stuff on for size. SA is really the land of backwards Bedouins...

Women in Iran work, drive, and are a part of society.

One good sign is that it looks like women in SA are finally having enough of this crap.

It's not going to change there. Unless the government was toppled. Even then it wouldn't change. BTW, if you didn't know, the as-Saoud clan and the al-Wahhab clan have practically merged over the last 300 years.

As the French used to say: Le sabre et le goupillon (the sabre and the big holy water sprinkler the bishops carry, i.e. the church and the king). When you put religion (especially Sunni Islam) and political power together in bed, that's what happens.

The main reason Iranian women are more able to live a more Westernized life is that Iran is a Shi'a Islam country, and actually closer, many say, to the original Islam (boy is that a topic for debate over there! It's partly why Iraq fought Iran in the 1980s). Even so the powers that be in Iran are also not not going to let Teheran turn into Vegas.

Hey, now that would be a good TV show:

CSI Teheran!
Marge Helgenberger in a veil?
Grissom in a turban??

woo hoo!

the thing I find funny is that supposedly it is the populous that wants this form of government and yet the magazines still sell. is it the womens fault for not covering up or the mens fault for buying the magazines and watching the TV shows? if they didnt buy them, they wouldnt be there, simple answer.

I would disagree with you on this point. The people have no say in their government at all . SA is one of the last absolute monarchies left in existence. There are no elections, no parliaments, heck, women aren't even considered citizens, but property...

If the people had the ability to change things, I bet they would. They love going to the UAE, where there are hardly any restrictions, each weekend to party.

Just because SA is an "ally"of ours, they get away with stuff that would have us up in arms like we are with human rights in China. Smart thinking on the King's part,eh?

I think the Human Rights in China crap is simply that. Crap. I don't think anyone pays any real attention to it. Sure, there is some uproar. Even some who will swear off Chinese products. However, when it comes down to it in the long run, and even the Chinese are laughing at it, we will not keep the boycott long enough to make any difference.

Trying to understand a completely different culture is tricky at best.
I understand the royal family's women travel and do all sorts of things officially banned for ordinary females.
