Personally, I think using derogatory slang to describe any segment of society cheapens your argument and makes the user seem boorish and uneducated. We understand you don't like these people, but resorting to calling names is immature and does not add credence to your point of view.

Sadly this is a quantitative effect one that bolsters hatred and stereotyping more than anything else. We blame the kids for this but its us adults who surreptitiously plant the seeds of hatred and then lament it later when the ****e finally hits the ceiling.

You do realise that any and all of your responses to any thread you visit will be under severe scrutiny, don't you?

I call them as I see them...Blacck, Yellow, Brown etc. I bet you refer to any black American as African-American, right? What if the black person is of Ethiopian decent? Or another country? I don't refer to myself as Scots-Irish-German-Native American-English-French American, do you?

My point is this...it isn't racially derogatory to call an illegal from Mexico a wetback. They got that moniker from coming through the Rio Grande river, and they got to American soil dripping wet. If we were to call all Mexicans wetbacks, then it becomes a racial issue.

You need to be able to tell the difference between racial issues and monikers.

In my world, there isn't one American citizen different than another when it comes to constitutional rights...if you are a legal citizen, then these rights are legally extended to you.

PC names are stupid and belittle people. A garbage man being called a Refuse Removal Technician is dumb.

I don't blame one age group over another...it's a societal issue

How dare you! The correct term is Sanitary Recovery Systems Engineer!

Can we get off the stupid name calling and back on topic? Is it a good idea to suspend ICE immigration raids for the year 2010 in order to count people who should not be here in the first place without making them feel 'threatened'? I think this is a crazy idea. First of all the (clears throat noises) Ahem 'Undocumented Immigrants' won't answer the census takers regardless of what ICE is doing - heck only 57% of legal residents take the census polls... Second by shutting down ICE for a year you will have such a flood of illegals coming across knowing that once they are in the USA they are safe, that the present flood will look like a trickle.

This is what I posted this thread to discuss. If you have an argument in favor of shutting down ICE for a year, I want to hear it and be convinced. I can care less about who is a redneck, wetback, moron, etc

Almost majority of the garbage collectors in my borough of Staten Island as well as adjoining NY and Queens and Westchester are of Italian American origin, guess they should now be called the de facto garbage collectors. This is how it all starts I guess.

Having read this thread, I can understand why the government can't resolve the immigration issue. Its such a hot topic that emotions take over and everyone becomes a name-caller or an extremist.
If we can't even discuss the issue, how can we ever solve the problem?

I for one agree wholeheartedly that illegal immigration is vastly hurting legal immigration and those immigrants who trudge hard and get in by dint of their merit or hard work feel grossly cheated when sweeping amnesty is given and without any hard work, illegals are made legals in one brushing move. This gives them encouragement to stay back illegally. I also feel that so called US employers who knowingly and willfully hire illegals to maximize their profits are not punished enough. They take this for granted when they get away with a pat on their back. Fines don't hurt, imprisonment does.

Back on topic...

ICE should not be shut down.

May I remind everyone that Rahm Emanuel worked under Gore to push the now ICE into rubber stamping hundreds of thousands of citizenship requests during 1995 to help swing the vote in Clinton's favor. I feel there is an ulterior motive at work here...

Yes, I am aware that W wanted to legalize all illegal immigrants during his time in office. I was against that as well.

That being said, I feel the democrats in power are trying to push the enelope a bit here with this issue.

Immigration laws are a lot like copyrights--If you don't enforce them, you lose the right to enforce them. Mercedes Benz is protecting their copyright, and so this forum becomes peachparts. We fail to regulate immigration, soon we lose the country.

Exactly...we have all these laws protecting our borders, yet the enforcement agents are helpless to defend the borders because immigration has become such a hot political issue. The more they let in, the more voters for one party or another...

Hey, if you can't discuss the issues without using derogatory slang, it just reflects poorly on your level of education and intelligence. Scrutinize all you want, I am not a racist, nor do I rely on insulting 'monikers'

I just can't figure out the need to address someone based on their ethnicity, color and creed, that indicates our attitude here from the very beginning, why can't we just call them a person and an American, thats all.
