You might not be aware of this, but for the most part even prior to HOAs, neighborhoods were not mansions next to shacks. Neighborhoods were, as they are today, mainly by price point. If one could afford a house in the area, one usually fit the same mold as the other people who lived in the area. When I was a kid, we lived in a couple houses built before HOAs. Even though there was no rule stopping them, no one on our street stored old fridges or cars on blocks in their yards. They mowed their lawns. It is true that they had whatever color mailbox they wanted, but no one seemed to mind.
Once, we were on vacation for a month, and the person my dad asked to cut our lawn didn't do it. When we came back, someone had cut a strip in the lawn. No retarded HOA overreaction was necessary for the neighborhood to manage itself.

But way back then, people were a different breed too. Take my house for instance. According to HOA rules, no attached buildings. They never gave me grief for my decent looking shed. OTOH, someone put up a tin plated shed that made a lot of noise in the wind. HOA told them to remove it within a certain time. Mine is not only against the covenant but it is against city rules that stated you have to be 3 feet away from the main building. HOA never gave me grief. After an owner's boat "floated" away from his yard into his neighbor's, they told him to move it. They were about to do something when it rolled into the street and got destroyed. All because he put it in an unsafe manner.

the problem with HOAs are not the rules per se, but who runs them and all their little personality quirks, vindictiveness and targeted enforcement being the worst of them

BTW, it's no bed of roses being a member of a HOA's board.

Thank you I thought I was the only one who that about "them." Where I live you'd think they never went outside...control freaks the lot of them! They about lost their minds when I started covering my cars in the parking lot.

Therein lies the problem. From what I have seen so far, most are ok but there are a few that have some oddballs in them. In our last case, the developer was the HOA and when he had sold 75% of the lots or 5 years elapsed, he transferred it to the residents. For the most part, if you were halfway decent, nobody bothered you. OTOH, if you get outrageous, well....

Or, buy the run down shack. I've always tried to buy the smallest cheapest most run down house in the neighborhood. Makes for a nice return after some work, and the neighbors love you.

LET'S ALSO REMOVE ALL FREE LICENSE PLATE FRAMES WITH THE DEALERSHIP NAME ON THEM.
HOW ABOUT CAMPING SITE STICKERS?
WAIT- WHAT ABOUT REMOVING THE BRAND NAME OFF THE CAR? IT'S ADVERTISING TOO!

I get calls about people wanting to stick a regular OTA antenna (looks like a pissed-off porcupine) on their units but they claim the HOAs and trailer parks have covenants prohibiting them...yet they allow the little pizza-pan sized satellite dishes...

I let them know that the SCOTUS had already ruled on that and in short, "A rose is a rose..."

In essence, an antenna is an antenna by the FCC's definition and the SCOTUS upheld it.

So, by definition, if they have been allowing the vehicle/dealer branding (form of advertising) and aren't able to provide proof that they have been enforcing the "advertising provision" on vehicles with that particular set of "stickers" attached to each and everyone, then the stickers from the Marine Corps should be allowed to stay on the HRR...god forbid the HOAs figure out that the hubcaps have a "Nash," "Ford," "Chevy bowtie" or even the "Star" embossed on them...

This HOA is opening one big stinky can of worms if there's any attoney worth his snake-skinned jacket willing to pursue the oblivious down this crooked street of reasoning...

Someone needs to run against Mr. Busybody and can his ash...then nit-pick him to an earlier grave...see if he enjoys being on the wrong side of the rules...

this is my point, and all you have to do is prove the enforcement is not unconditional and it becomes harassment and then you go after the board members. Im sure they know this in FLA.

anyway, to avoid these issues I bought 1.5 acres in unincorporated Hillsborough. My neighbors are 100 feet away on both sides so I dont care if one decides to paints his house pink
