They are expensive now since it's the top of the curve, but if you wait 6 months or so, they should drop in price once the next iteration of models is released.

That is where I would put my money.

If you are looking to spend less than $1K, I would recommend a Samsung LCD, 5 series or higher.
I don't see how the LED backlighting will have anything to do with bad pixels.

We're very happy with the Panasonic plasma that we bought in Dec.

Be careful viewing them in the stores. My impression is that in a bright store, the LCD TVs pop because they're brighter. But the contrast is relatively poor - you can't see the detail in the dark areas of the picture.

If you will be watching in a bright room, LCDs may be the ticket. Ours is in a darkish room, and I prefer the greater depth of the plasma.

My $.02.

what and where do you watch..

a few areas to consider....and may be old news now, but check

- off angle viewing, plasma is typically better
- fast action (sports), plasma is great, older LCD's were not as good, newer ones are pretty good
- games, plasmas can get burn in, LCD won't
- some plasma screens reflect more glare

- size - A friend said, when in doubt, go big. I was looking between a 50 and 58. We got a leftover 58 on the net for about the same price as a new 50 and are glad we did.

True that, my bad. It won't affect stuck pixels. Improved uniformity yes, bad pixels - hopefully improved but not related to LED.

I am not trying to argue with you! However, I believe the advantage of the LED backlighting is not uniformity, but what they call "color gamut". Basically, wider range of colors and more accurate colors and more saturated colors.

My wife and I have a Sharp Aquos LCD and are very happy with it, though I have heard of the "banding" issues. I think it's sort of hit or miss with that and we got lucky. There are the inheirant issues with off axis black levels rising which is less apparent with plasmas, but we don't have to worry about burn in when playing with the wii or any other games.
BTW, I work in television so I'm pretty picky about this stuff!

Glad you got a good one! Mine had a nasty black band across the upper half. I did really like the color quality of the Aquos, would have kept it save for the band.

Check out the new LED DLP models too. They're pretty inexpensive and the picture is great. My dad got a Samsung 65 or 67" (cant remember which) for about $1200.

Banding pops up from tiime to time, usually when one plant or another doesn't properly keep their equipment clean. Usually the root cause is trace amounts of oil on the conveyor belts. It is not limited to any one manufacturer. The various manufacturers buy each other's panels based on demand.

For my money, Plasma sucks bugs. LCD is much better. Plasmas run hotter, don't last as long, and radiate so much electical hash that I don't know how they manage to pass FCC approval.

There will be no more Aquos in the larger sizes, except for the 108 inch. They are switching to LED, owing to a patent dispute with Samsung. What's in the stores now is the last of the LCD Aquos in 46 and above. Not sure about 42's.
