I left work later than I like to (3:30 instead of 1:30) in DC yesterday. I wanted to head back to NY. I spent about 2.5 hours fighting traffic on Rt 7 trying to get to US -15 in Manassas. I finally got to the 15 and sat in more construction. This stank but it was no the bad part.

I made it to near Gettysburg on the US 15 when I got a flat tire. I pulled over to the shoulder and jacked up the truck. I was in the Suburban. I was working on getting the tire off the truck when a car pulled up behind my truck. a guy got out ad asked if I needed help. While he distracted me a second guy snuck up behind me and STUCK A KNIFE IN MY BACK! I was powerless to stop them from grabbing my wallet! They grabbed the cash and threw the wallet into the grass then took off. They got around $65. I got a tear in the back of my shirt and a small cut.

I also got to finish changing the tire...

BEWARE AS THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!

I did not see the second guy as he went behind the truck and the noise of the road kept me from hearing him.

If anybody stops to "help" you in the side of the road, get your back to the vehicle and grap a weapon. If I had been able to swing the tire iron, things would have been different.

I have stopped and helped people on the side of the road, but I will think twice about stopping from now on. If I do I will stand far from the driver and show him or her that I have no weapons before trying to help.

That's a drag, glad it didn't turn out worse than it did.

I cringe when I see minivans around here with the little stick figure decals, that tell anyone who would care to look, that there is a mom, a dad, 5 kids and 2 cats in the household. Worse yet, the kid's names and jersey number for whatever sport they play, on decals on the back of the SUV. I don't have any identifiers on my car to give any information like that away to a potential assailant.

Scary world we live in.

Note to self...don't break down in Pennsylvania.....

I'm just glad that it was only a small cut. It probably could have been a lot worse. Did you keep the knife so the cops can hopefully find a fingerprint on it?

Nope I never got it. They kept it.

The funny thing is that my laptops (both DHS and private) were in the truck as was my phone, watch, GPS, and RADAR detector. They just got some cash. They dropped the wallet with all my ID, credit cards etc in it.
Typical Crackhead behavior.

Next time I break down, I will have MY KNIFE ready to hand.

Also I will be on super alert status and not be kneeing there cursing that fact that I was getting my suit pants filthy.

You work for DHS and can't get a Federal license to carry?

Terrible thing to endure for anyone.
Police have a bad job, but one will walk away from this thinking that the cops attitude is no one got seriously hurt, just cash, report it, but unless these idiots repeat, they will drop it.
You on the other hand, emotionally stressed, cut on back, out the money, just violated. You are consoled, It could have been worse.

BS. I believe that this will repeat be a more common occurance. Economy is not picking up any time soon, and more job terminations, will cultivate more crime.

As good people, we are trusting soles, HOWEVER, this unfortunate crime emphasises the need for personal vigilance. As stated previously, If something does not look right, it probably is not.

I have apoligized more than once for jumping to the ugly side of a situation, thinking the other person was up to no good.

I work for the computer crunching side not the law enforcement side. BUT I am going to look into getting a federal permit. Although a gun would not have helped in this situation. Oh on an intersting note, There was nothing wrong with my tire! The valve stem was loosend enough to let the air out! I am now thinking that trhese guys must have followed me into The Shamrock when I stopped off to get a pie to briing up, targeted me, then followed me knowing I would soon be disabled. If that is the case I cannot understand why they did not either knife me and throw me in the ditch or knock me out so they could strip everything out of the truck and maybe even take the truck as well.
Maybe something spooked them.

In any case I am glad that I got out of this with only having to buy a new tire and replace a bit of cash. The tire's sidewall immediately blew out and could not be driven on, although it does still hold air!

If you are driving through Maryland on US-15 be especially careful if you stop at The Shamrock or anyplace else.

I feel the same way too... Somebody can follow one of these rolling advertisements and then get the kids to come close talking about their cat or brother...

I have nothing on my cars. I should get a couple NRA stickers on them though...

Good advice. That stuff happens everywhere today.

Wow thats scary, I'm glad your ok!

Stories like this make me want to get my CC permit and start carrying. Never know when your going to need to defend yourself.

If you had a gun in your truck or on you, you could have sent a few rounds after them as a parting gift.

If I had been more aware, I could have had the knife I keep in the truck out and in my hands (closed and covered) with my back against the side of the vehicle as the guys approached me. As it was, if I HAD a pistol, it would have either been out of reach or taken from me before I could react. NEVER AGAIN!

I am seriously thinking of getting a protection piece to keep in the truck and in the car when I drive back and forth from NY to DC (WV)

This reaffirms why I carry a firearm.

I had some **** like that happen to me a few years back. My car broke down (damn alt belt!!!) and I pulled to the side of the road to wait for AAA, I sat in passenger side of my car and relaxed on the side of the road (in the middle of no where). I had tint so it was hard to see in. Well Im sitting in the car and I notice a beat up old pickup pull up behind me. I instinctively reach for a hunting knife and as he approaches I stepped out. he didnt see the knife as I had it concealed by my body but I could tell he was up to no good... He left without incident.

Scary stuff, man. Glad it wasn't worse.
Having a gun often seems like it's a good idea, but imagine if you had it on you and they grabbed it instead of your wallet. A gun is not a magic talisman.
I hope the cops nab these guys, though I won't hold my breath.
