Murray is the better actor, Chase is better in SNL skits.... Can't say that i enjoyed the Wes Anderson movies though. When I look at Stripes, etc. they seem very dated now...but those movies did carry on the National Lampoon tradition....

I think not. The gopher was obviously better than both them put together. Chase did apear in a music video with Paul Simon. I would vote Murry. I would also put Steve Martin in the arguement. I'd still say Murray though. I'm not a big fan of any of them though.

i can't believe how many people keep saying they're not really into these guys.... they're hilarious!!!

as for caddyshack, can you really beat chevy chase singing:

"I was born to rub you, I was born to lick your face, I was born to rub you, but you were born to rub me first."

Chevy Chase isn't even in the same league. Bill Murry is a natural comic where Chevy Chase has to rely on others to tell him what's funny.

Between the two - I'd give Bill Murray the nod.

But...in my book, Steve Martin puts them both to shame - no contest.

No contest Bill Murray.
A true actor, I think most would agree, is Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, or Forest Whitager. It's hard to know the actor's ability in just commedy. That being said, Murray's Groundhog Day is hilarious. Additionally, I always thought Chevy Chase was a bit boring - the story lines in Lampoon's Vacation & Christmas make the films - but I thought he did a fine job recently playing the part of a deranged father on a Law & Order series. He actually made me believe he was someone other than Chevy Chase.

Trying to argue about who's the funniest is like arguing about who's the world best painter...

Picaso or DeVinci...

...or the guy who does your house for free...

It all depends on what YOU saw, WHEN you saw it, WHO you saw it with and then, under the correct circumstances, was it enjoyable...

Throw out THOSE scenarios, then you might have a truly good starting point for a comparision...

Everyone mentioned is funny in their own particular way...and when the person strays from his pedigree and goes into an acting mode that's outside of what he's/she's about, then you're changing the discussion all together...

Although, when Chevy did the L&O show, there were certain points on the close-ups that I had a *tingle* of a recall to his post-punch sip of eggnog just before he goes into his "MY BOSS IS AM A55h0l3!" speech in Christmas Vacation...a bit that I would love to learn, word for word, for one of those comic moments we all want to have when the time is just right!!!

It will be a sad day when any of them pass on...just as sad as when Rodney went a little while ago...

Both in the "ORIGINAL" SNL were great!

But out of the movies the past twenty years, though Chase in the Vacation Movies, some of the funniest movies that I have ever seen. And Murry in Stripes and What about Bob.

So lets say that they are even, betwen Vacation series and Stripes, What about Bob and Quick Change.

There three movies lines up that we will give them even.

Going back to the times before, Murry in Caddyshack wins hands down against Chase in the movie.

"I have even developed my own grass, its a mix between northern california semillia and ........"

That my 0.02 cents..........

Recently watched pink panther 2 with martin....I can generally take him or leave him too, but really enjoyed that.

I really liked him in parenthood too....course I always have liked mary steinburger (is that the right last name?)...my favorite line after he rear ended a car massively as mary was giving him oral service (off camera) was when the officer asked him ...ok what were you doing right before the crash...and he and mary looked at each other....

I guess I like martin better as a dramatic actor. When he first came out I couldn't stand his egotistical performance but now when I look at his old clips I think....what the heck was he doing? His stuff was just so completely different from anything else.
