Wish I had known him. Being at the wheel of a square rigger has been one of the highlights of my life. My condolences.

Please accept my condolences Randy. I enjoyed meeting your dad at the Texas GTG's.
Your original post in this thread is awesome and a tribute I truly appreciate.

My condolences to you and your family. I lost my dad in '98 and know how difficult it is.

BTW, my mother's side of the family is from Temple TX.

Randy, I send my condolences, and my father sends his condolences as well. I remember we first met him at the Houston GTG in 04 and saw him again at the Texas GTG in 06. I remember he gave me a little tip should I ever find myself ever needing to count cattle. Just count up all of the legs and divide by four. I will never forget that.

Hopefully he died well. I know that if the wife were attending him he would since most of her patients died well with minimal fuss and little discomfort.

Out of your words it seems he was a great guy someone who I would have loved to have met and having a whiskey coke with on his porch and listen to his stories. Cheers on a life well lived, my thoughts are with you and your family.

There are some that are not as fortunate. They struggle to breath or are in pain before they die.

When death is imminent, the wife usually adjusts the meds to give maximum comfort. Say if you are struggling to breath, she might prescribe oxygen to ease the breathing and other meds to slow breathing down so as not to make you gasp for breath. Not sure exactly what she does but from what I am told, it makes the passing easier. Easier is better.

"Sea-Fever"

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

By John Masefield (1878-1967).
(English Poet Laureate, 1930-1967.)

Fair winds and clear skies old salt.

My Dad passed in 05 after a life well lived. He suffered some but not too terriblly as far as I could tell.

At first I did not feel too strongly about it but recently I have missed him a lot. Since he lived in another town and not with us or next door my daily routine did not include his physical presence so it was not so noticable as it would be in your case with him actually living with you, perhaps.

Recently Dad appeared in my morning dream briefly and talked about making a camp fire. He loved the outdoors and always talked about how the children loved being outdoors (in real life). I woke up with wet eyes. It is the first time I can remember ever weeping in a dream.

Its funny how grief works. I guess I have been supressing it without realizing.

Although its redudndant, my sincerest condolences. At least for me, losing my father was tough, although it took a year for me to finally deal with it emotionally.

Your eulogy speaks volums of the relationship you had with him. Pass that on to your children and will do well.
