Nah this was down in Philly this evening. Severe thunderstorms, hail, the whole lot.

And since starting this thread I've invested in a nice DSLR which actually can do things that make shooting lightning a bit easier! By the time it was dark enough to let the lens open for more than a second the lightning was too far away. I did manage to snap these though:

Now that you have a more capable camera, look into using what is called a neutral density filter. This is essentially a dark piece of glass that will permit you to extend the time the shutter is open.

Also see if your camera has a noise reduction feature. This will help eliminate the color noise in the pix. In addition, setting the camera to the lowest ASA or ISO it can be set to will go a long way to eliminate color noise.

Lastly, carry a 1 iron golf club with you when photographing lightning....

I actually picked up a ND filter yesterday, very eager to try it out.

^By far the best of the bunch because they show the subject in the landscape and also have great color.

No one is going to ask why you should carry a 1 iron golf club when photographing lightning?

Thanks! Yeah I finally got a good vantage point and understand the camera a lot better. Still a ton to learn, but what an adrenaline rush! Unfortunately too much precep to get closer shots

Turned aperture up to like f/32, ISO down as far as it would go and it helped a lot.

Having had a few close calls with lightning, I really don't like it. Nice pics though.
