Lightning
We had some nasty storms roll through tonight in CT. While our power was out, I figured out how to get some pictures of the lightning. Its a learning process and I only have a small digital camera (Canon). Has anyone else ever tried?

Very good. The second and third in particular remind me of one I took many years ago now. Probably around 20 or so in fact, from my back yard in Durban, South Africa. It was a 35mm film camera. Minolta X300s. Can't remember the settings I used. If I can find the pic' I'll try to upload it or a link to it. Interesting to see that the purplish color of the clouds looks very similar to the color in my old film pic. I guess it must be a "true" color of lighting effects on storms.

Thanks guys! It is a Canon A540, a few years old and only a point-and-shoot. I wish I could afford a nice Nikon SLR.

Those are great! That is a good camera too.
We had some bad storms here today too. The lightning was non stop for a few hours. I was just peering out the window at it. Mesmerizing... I did not think to grab the camera. Maybe next time. Thanks for sharing!!!

Lightning photos
1. Use a tripod. Old wooden tripods are better than metal ones in a lightning storm. See Ben Franklin.
2. Stop lens down at least halfway. See Ansel Adams. 3. Go for a minimum of 30 sec. exposure. See owner's manual to see how this is done. The 30 sec will get you multiple bolts of lightning, or nothing, depending on where the camera is pointed. 4. Depend mostly on luck and shoot a lot of pictures. 5. Use an electronic shutter release so you don't have to touch the camera. |

As far as safety goes, I shot these from inside my apartment, I'm pretty careful about that. I heard a kid about an hour away was struck and killed by these storms yesterday
