True, many banks now offer free checking. My main acct. is free. I guess I should ask which bank offers free checking with the lowest or even no minimum balance? Btw, I'm in CA, if that makes any difference.

Go to checkingfinder.com they are listing banks that are free. If you can use USAA they are great. I get free checking, free checks, not atm fees for using other peeps atms, up to 15 dollars a month reimbursed for other peoples atms and interest and debit rewards. I also use their insurance and investments. They are truly awesome.

On the east coast, Liberty Bank offers free checking with no minimum, and they refund all ATM fees.

I have my pay-check direct-deposited to all three accounts...just enough to the checkings to keep them lubed...and I transfer whatever I need to them from the savings...limiting my risk if "something" should happen to the cards...
