applied for real college..

Two weeks ago I sent in my application to the University of Central Florida for a transfer in the spring(with my AA) and the period of knowing if I am in or not is 2-4 weeks.. It has been 12 days so in two days I should have an answer, if not within two more weeks...

I am so nervous!

Don't worry I am working on my applications to The University of South Florida and Florida State. The University of Florida is on my list too

Nice! I know how you feel, the waiting is nerve racking. What degree are you going for?

Good luck, Joe!

If you get into USF prepare yourself for regular thumpings on the field and court by UConn.

I have friends who do the community college track for a year and fill up on easy credits for requirements towards a full major.

Needless to say there's nothing wrong with it and is probably the smarter thing to do if money is tight!

Good luck man. I remember my senior year and the anxiety of not knowing what I will be doing in a year is

Eh, its not all bad to go to a CC. I did that. I took some classes during High School, did one year at the CC, and then went to a 4 year school for 3 years...and now have my degree. As for the "fun stuff at school"...eh, whatever, I preferred wrenching on my car.

I did find my wife there though.

I met a guy a few years ago (at a Harley Davidson function) who was an attorney and a CPA. There aren't many of them around. He was working for Price Waterhouse Coopers at the time.

I asked him about his "education track" out of curiosity. He told me he went to Montclair University (a NJ state university) for his first two years then transferred to Boston College and got his "pedigree degree" at a steep discount.
(He then went to work for PWC, became a CPA and they paid for his law school at NYU)

Point: It's not where you start. It's where you finish.

CC's can be a smart move. At my school, in my department, it's quite possible that you'll have the same instructor you'd have had at the University of Colorado at Boulder, except you have 30 students in your section instead of 400. Our school also offers a 3+1 program where a student attends CC for three years then transfers to the local Jesuit university from which they earn their Bachelors degree. That saves the student tens of thousands of dollars in college costs but the diploma still says the same thing.
But, you're correct, the social life of a CC is very different unless you attend a residential CC and in Colorado that would mean a rural school, which would have even less appeal than an urban CC.
Florida has a very good CC-University transfer program so you should be fine. The studies I am familiar show that CC transfer students achieve at a higher level than native university students.
The best line I've heard on this general topic came from a CC transfer student on a panel addressing the question of how to smooth the transition from being a CC student to a university student. In answer to the question, "What can CC's do to the aid the transition?" the student replied, "Teach their professors to be more rude to students."

Somebody I know used to call it "Thirteenth grade." That always made me laugh.

Nothing wrong with Thirteenth grade, though. I went. I learned a lot, and I have done pretty well in life. So, there's no need to look down on going to a community college. In the end, it doesn't matter where you went to school. What counts is what you do with it once you have gotten that education.

Good luck, Joe.

CCs are a great move, as long as you take it seriously. The "13th grade" bug hits a lot of people and it prevents them from transferring into a college or university for the last couple years due to bad grades. You can save a ton of money and still get a good education. Good luck, hope you get in everywhere you want!

Joe -

Good luck- only thing as I found out going from DBCC (now Daytona State College) to Florida State is that its still sort of more of the same. I think you really need to get out of state and at least far from home to really get a taste of what its like to be on your own. I know financially that can be another thing entirely.

Some of the posts reminded me of the episode of "Big Bang Theory" when Sheldon told neighbor Penny to "give it the good old college try, or in your case the community college try . . ."
