Just think what I could do with a truckload of Mirifi GeoTextile, and many trucks of stone. I could become the chief highway engineer for Siberia. Oh, wait--that might not be a good thing....

The Scottish actor, Ewan MacGregor and his friend Charlie ride motorcycles from London to NY, across Europe and Asia. The footage of the eastern Asian roads is great. Should be available on DVD. The also recently completed Long Way Down, from John O'Groats to Cape Town.

Yeah the Germans had a blast on those roads, nothing could move until they froze over. Imagin trying to drive 300 tanks, support trucks, guns, and 30k troops down that nightmare! Even tanks got stuck, you know its muddy when tracked vehicals get stuck!

I remember Guderian writing about how pissed off he was when Hitler ordered him 250 miles south to Keiv, he was like WTF do you relize how hard that is? Its not like driving 250 miles down the autobahn.

From the link-

"Apparently Russia is infamous for its bad roads. For instance, the cynics insist Russia's bad roads had more to do with stopping the advance of the German army in World War II than anything the Red Army did."

Gotta admit that they are right to a certain extent....Eastern front must have sucked, get shot, freeze or drown in mud....

But if Hitler had actually gotten to eastern Siberian roads, we'd probably all be speaking German now.

I don't even think there were that many roads back then...The Trans Siberian Railway would have been a bigger worry.

Back than they were all just as crappy. The Volga was the designated stop line, BTW.

Long Way Round has great footage of Ural trucks hauling the bikes through some impassable rivers.

I would bet no.

Having nce studied this area in depth, even 6x6 and 8 x 8 GAZ vehicles get stuck there.

That's why they usually iuse limited air transport which drops needed items.
