Rant: public toilets

Its bad enough to walk into a stall and find that someone's pi$$ed all over the seat -- how hard is it to kick the seat up with your shoe if you don't want to touch it, or just to aim, for that matter? -- but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

What's with the cigarette ashes and burns in toilet seats? And how about that nasty "film" that gets on the seat? I'm not even sure what that is; is it a fat sweaty person's underwear lint that adheres to the seat? It's like someone's peppered their butt hair and then set on a layer of elmer's glue, leaving that mess behind.

Hell, one time I was in a Denny's and someone had dumped on the floor in the corner, about a foot from the toilet itself. And don't get me started on the booger collection point at neck-level in front of the urinals. Sheesh...

Tell me about it. I used to work maintenance at a grocery store. I had to clean the restrooms. How in the hell can some peoples anus' explode like that? I dont get it. I have to admit since I had gotten another job and was working my maintenance job and my current job at the same time, I got real lazy. When I went into a stall and someone had blown up all over the toilet and wall, I just blocked off the stall and marked it out of order. The next maintenance dude would have to clean it. Just yesterday I walked into a Pep boys restroom and thought to myself how nice it was to walk into a restroom that smelled so good.

I avoid public facilities at any cost, your description is so accurate that it has further made me more resolute to avoid them at any cost, thank you very much.

Interesting(?) thread.
I stopped in an almost local connivence store, boy was it! Anyway, that was the cleanest, nicest facility I have ever visited, I went out of my way to point that out to the staff.

Wonder if women's public restrooms are the same? Mistress?
One problem is that if a person does create a mess, there are few choices for cleaning it up by yourself. Wonder if some cleaning supplies were left accessible if people would take it upon themselves to clean up? If I were responsible for the cleanliness of a public restroom, I'd conduct a little experiment and leave obviously available cleaning supplies around and see what happens.

I don't think I'd touch anything I didn't have to in a public restroom. Dollars to donuts says as soon as you put a bottle of 409 or a toilet brush next to a crapper, someone will a) pee on it, b) crap on it, or c) steal it (or any combination thereof).

In places I've stayed in Germany, each toilet has a brush next to it so you can clean up as necessary (i.e. not leave marks in the bowl). Folks seem to use them, too.

It is public and therefore anonymous so nobody feels like they should clean up after themselves. All that would happen would be that the supplies would walk out with the offenders.

At my job the bathrooms are worse that the ones in a truck stop. We are all supposed to be professionals but for some reason Federal employees act like they were raised in a third world country by rabid wolves and taught to clean up after themselves by the "Capital One" barbarians...

When I was in NYC the companies I worked for all had spotless facilities

when I lived in Germany, the few public toilets on the autobahn made truck stops seem like mom's home bathroom.....

Someone would use those cleaning supplies. On their own toilet.

I used to be the gofer-guy at a fine restaurant many moons ago, and even in nice places there can be some nasty nasty restroom "artistry". What surprised me in the beginning was that the ladies side was often worse than the mens side.

Agreed. Those supplies would not be there the next time you went to clean the restroom.

On topic...Public restrooms never really bothered me. Must be in part my sense of smell (or lack there of) combined with my upbringing of camping/hunting/fishing trips where there was no such thing as a 'restroom'. It was find a tree. After not having a shower for a week you'd be amazed how nice a convienence store restroom is...running water was nice.

I've never understood the things that happen in public restrooms either....the stuff I have seen left behind IN the toilet by people, and just the plain filth of the facility. It is truly an American thing.....you would never see such horror in Europe. People there have manners and pride in such things, and everything is clean and neat, not just the bathrooms. The autobahn facilities are amazing. There is just something wrong with the mentality of so many people here....they are true slobs.

I work in side of a government defense contractors building I am amazed that people do not flush the toilets half the time.
