Wildlife crossing

On Sunday, as I was cruising along in my Dodge truck with my Miata up on the utility trailer, headed for the autocross in South Bend at the tire rack test track I was on a pretty small, obscure country road near Flora Indiana and Logansport while taking a detour, profiled by the rising sun, I noted a noble beast crossing the road in front of me.

The profile was clearly silouetted by the rising sun. I noted the slender nose, the four swiftly moving legs and the outstreched tail. I was unable to determine the exact color and so was a little unsure of the species of the beast....

I was unsure whether it was a Shrew or a Mouse.

No kidding.

But it was a glorious day, the autocross course was to my liking and to my car's liking and I took home the plastic.

This year has been good to me for spotting rare creatures.

Early winter-Bobcat crossing the road in Kent CT. Its one of those moments where your staring at it and thinking its a cat but can't help but notice that something is off and then you realize what it really is.

Couple of weeks ago-Black bear crossing the road in Cornwall CT. (Parents saw this one)

Constantly-Deer....always deer. A few years ago when I had a girlfriend she was in the car with me and completely freaked out because there was a dear crossing the road a good 500 feet in front of us....it was uphill in the SDL....I think I was alright

Just the other week-Caught in a trap in our backyard. I'd NEVER seen anything like this before and neither had a 95 year old farmer who lives just up the street from us.

Wolverine. (Right?)

A very rare creature for sure. The largest member of the weasel family if I am not mistaken. Very very powerful and viscious for its size. The only way to get that out of the trap safely would be to tranquilize, I imagine.

I see skunks and deer all the time, live near a state park. The deer are awfully stupid and aren't scared of cars at all.

It is kind of creepy sometimes when I take a late night walk and see racoons and muskrats (vicious little bastards) crawling out of the storm drains.

Fisher. Real common up in Northern New England but becoming increasingly more so down here. Real eerie call, almost like a baby crying. They are pretty aggressive, too. Good for clearing the area of stray cats and the like.

I live in a semi-rural area. Couple of years ago ON THANKSGIVING, I am leaving my neighborhood about dawn to meet some friends for a run. My path is blocked by a rafter* of turkeys who are taking their time strutting across the road. It cracked me up to see them strutting like Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in that prison movie Stir Crazy.

We call them squirrels where I live. Seriously, last autumn I spotted a opossum, raccoon, fox, and deer in my yard in one day.

I enjoyed this topic, Thanks!

Wow, those Fishers are creepy looking!

Around here we commonly see: Deer, coyotes, skunks, squirrels, woodchucks, moles, shrews, garden snakes, toads, mice, turkeys, geese, ducks, gulls, falcons, etc.....lots of wildlife around here!

I have nearly hit several deer, and very nearly hit a coyote! The only thing I've ever actually hit/killed was a male (red) cardinal that flew across my car while I was doing 60mph, and hit the A-pillar real hard. Dead on impact most likely. Blood all over the car/windows.

If I'm not mistaken, the Fisher Cat was reintroduced into CT by the DEP, back in the late '80's

I would like to introduce a Fisher Cat to my area to make ****** cat owners keep their cats inside or be eaten, the coyotes have been very ineffective this summer.

x2. My neighbor, a lovely lady in many ways, feeds about four feral cats who like to hang around my place and try to get the drop on birds and chipmunks.

Grrrrrr!

I just googled it. I don't recall every hearing of a fisher cat before. I see they are a lot smaller than the wolverine. the above picture made it look a lot larger to me.
