My '88 Jeep Comanche has been sitting in the front driveway for about 3 years. No one has complained. One of the neihbors got the rear end recently as his broke. I have hanged a wet blanket or such on the back porch. No undies though. Another plus of clothes lines, is that they don't damage your clothes. Yes, that lint comes from somewhere. Its getting cold out now, so I had to let a blanket dry inside.
I remeber last time I was in Germany, we were allowed to use the washer, but not the dryer. Electricity is like $.25/KwHr. I think NY is like $0.14 and here is $0.08/kWhr. We were allowed to hang them on the clothes line. It rained and rained, during one week. Even when it wasn't suppose to. It was actually a dry and hot summer for Germany. One of the jokes was one of the guys with us, when he hung his sock out it would rain. The woman who owned the Gasthaus, came down for breakfast and asked how the weather was. Some said it was raining. She rushed out side. When comming back in she couldn't believe it. The weather forecaster said 'no rain'. Auf Duetch of course. Some one said that Han's had left his sock out on the line. She just nodded her head and said, 'That make sense' or such. Auf Deutch again.
I had to hang my clotches in the room that week. She didn't like that. Latter we could get on base and do laundry. None of us had military ID. Then the Gulf war or such and Lockerby PanAm stuff and things tightened up. I was back state side by then.

So does my adopted father and he is upset that the neighbor's place, which I mistook as an abandoned house, looks like a mess.

Jeez I hate those things. One wonders how much money is devoted to that vital industry.

And I'm with you, the artificial scenting is usually nauseating. Sorta like sugar free coke. It is to gag.

I have been using Mrs. Meyers dyer sheets. They are from the Health Food store. Suppose to be toxin free. I do notice a bit of static cling in some clothes though. They do have a Basil sent. I did notice another type of anti-static sheets, last time I was there. From the packaging, they look like a towel of some sort. Two per pack and reuseable. I haven't used them, so I don't know any more about them.

The city council here considered a change in our ordinance recently to allow some chickens to be raised in the city. I was thinking I might get three or four so I could have my own fresh eggs. It failed to pass.

There is simply nothing like the smell of line dried sheets and so forth!

A somewhat funny story about land, city council and chickens or actually chicken poop, possibly pig poop. A land developer around here wanted to put a stip mall out by the highway. I think part of the intent was to put an enertainment complex in there. Read bars. It was near a rich upscale neighborhood. So it got voted down. The owner noticed the land was zoned as agricultural. So, he put down the fertilizer. After the strench clears, people rethought weather it needed developed or not. I think apartments and some stores are sitting on the land now.

I've got to find a good place for a line, maybe even between the house and the playscape. As you can imagine we generate a good amount of laundry and it'd be great to cut down on the dryer usage. I grew up in a dryer house but my wife came from a line dry house and I'd like to give her that part of her past back.

I've got a friend who lives a couple towns south, still suburbia but a little more rural, who started off with a few chickens for the eggs and tick control around the yard. A year later came a goat and the following year a half-share of a dairy cow. He says that be careful, chickens are the gateway animals!

During the summer I wear mostly light wool and technical fabric clothing. I just hang my clothes indoors. In fact my whole family wears technical fabric clothes in the summer. In the winter I wear wool. Doesn't smell, you don't have to wash it for weeks.

Think that might be a part of it? Especially in this economic season where it is harder to sell a house?
What I don't understand is why we are hostage to other people's property values based on arbitrary opinions of what look bad.

That's our problem. We care too much about how it looks on the outside.

Unless it endangers my family I don't give a whit what my neighbors do with their own property. I would hope they would feel the same way towards me and so far they have.

That's getting to be a rare kind of neighborhood.

Trust me, I think it's only rare neighbors. The rest of the 'hood is just a notch below a HOA (or a notch above depending on you're perspective ).
