Interesting Cartoon From 1948

http://nationaljuggernaut.blogspot.com/2009/09/this-cartoon-seemed-far-fetched-in-1948.html

Not so subtly anti-communist. Discuss.

Ahhh yes, Harding University, Ken Starr's alma mater. He didn't get his degree there but he attended it for a couple of years.

The political 'toon was simplistic and a little heavy-handed on the "ism" control issue but it does indeed make a few points. But, then again, doesn't all propaganda contains just enough truth to make it seem legit?

cmac2012 10-25-2009 08:33 AM

That sort of thing has influenced many an American. Plenty of films with that same sort of tone in years past. The very sound of it makes my back teeth stand on edge.

Ah it's funny how the boogy man of the early 20th century (communism) has changed to a new one (terrorism).

The irony is that the American dream pits us against each other which is the best example of class separation that I can see.

Gotta love our Isms :P

Communism is dead, we beat it.

How is that bad? Competition is what makes the group stronger. If all of us earned $1000 whatever we did, why would we bother to excel? If you were paid and treated exactly the same as the other guy whether either or neither of you did anything but show up, why would you work your butt off to be better? Why would I stay up late and try think of new strategies to be better than you if the end result was the same? If you are a class 1 worker and get better treatment than a class 2 and I am in class 2, I might have some incentive to try to be class 1. OTOH, if you remove the sting of being idle by making us all classless, why should I try to be more productive than you?

The only example I know of that won't support it is my biological Dad. He s 72 and he works because he likes it. He has even said that if his business collapses tomorrow, he has enough in reserves to go learn golf. He has said he would do his work even though he made no money and could break even. I believe him. How many others are insane like him? If I got paid the same as you whether I am more productive or not, you bet I'll be sitting down eating Bon-Bons (not sure what they are. Never had one) when I am not being observed.

No, it beat us. We are adopting more and more of it.

Yes- we would be better off with out class separations- we could all be one class- I wonder if we would end up being first class or bottom rung?

I think that experiment was tried to some extent and failed. Many of the people found that they ended up on the bottom rung and stayed there till there were classes where they could, if they were willing and able, rise up in status.

I don't think in my previous post I said it was bad. I wasn't even implying it. I was pointing out the fallacy of J. Q. Public or whatever his name was ;)

Mtu, again I wasn't implying that. I wonder what you were getting that.

What tends to be grossly missed in any discussion of communism would be Marx and his advocating of social programs that we take advantage daily. Like schools, affordable housing, welfare, heathcare, and other social nets. Things that during his time were unheard of.

If Marx saw the social progress we've accomplished today he would be happy, even in the United States.

Karl's communism isn't at all like the authoritarian style of governing that Lenin, Stalin, and Mao use. It's unfortunate that his Manifesto or any of his works for that matter aren't even discussed in primary and secondary education. It would change a lot of the "communism is evil" mentality.

I don't know how I missed your post aklim, but you're right. We are adapting the social programs that Marx was advocating for.

Dr. ISM and Obama sell the same elixir.

Uncanny. It's almost like they saw the future.

Communism lives, we elected it!

The cartoon would look even more like today's ISM if it included the assertion that profits are bad. Also, the snake oil salesman should launch into ad hominem attacks towards anyone who disagrees with his positions.
