Time to take it to the shooting range, and buy a new one....

Can you not get it to boot into safemode, or can you not find safe mode?

I have an HP. I'll look for the discs tomarrow and take another crack at it.

How do you get vista into safe mode? I searched google and was told to press f8 when it starts up. I did that and it didn't work.

That can be said about many men who have cheated on their wives. Never had a problem. This herpes is the first time it has happened.

Nothing they can do to restore it if you don't have the disks.

You can order the disks on HP's website. You need the model and serial number. Costs less than $20 as I recall. Search HP website for "support".

If you can't get it into safe mode using the F8 key, you can try this tip using msconfig:

http://forums.techarena.in/tips-tweaks/1077241.htm

For free anti-malware software, I've used adaware but make sure you get it directly from lavasoft. AVG Free is also pretty good.

If you know the date the problem started, you may be able to use System Restore to return your system files to an uninfected state. I'd review this article first though. http://community.ca.com/blogs/securityadvisor/archive/2008/11/05/persistent-malware-microsoft-s-system-restore-feature.aspx

Since it seems you have access to a different computer, I'd park the infected one for a while, do some research then go in educated.

HOLD F8 or Ctrl down for a bit after you turn it on. That will get you to the menu to choose safe mode. Some computers it is F8, some its Ctrl. Just daintily plucking F8 will likely not get you anywhere.

Tried it in safe mode, no dice. I actualy thought that Microsoft program would work, but it kicked me off halfway through.

Right now my plan is to take powerpig up on his offer, and if that doesn't work put 5.56 rounds through it and buy a new computer.

Hatty, try renaming your antispyware program. Sometimes simply renaming Malwarebytes to "Blastthem" or such is enough to get by the bug. Other option is to pull hte hard drive and connect it to another computer that has Malwarebytes, as a secondary drive and then run the antispyware against the drive that way. Just remember to update the antispyware right before you run it. I have seen malwarebytes update their definition file like 10 times in one day! Unfortunately, I have to debug PCs all day. With 5-600 computers here, they are always getting into trouble and management won't do anything about it.

Then your best be is to connect the HDas secondary drive in a running, clean unit. I have one running that way next to me right now and another waiting for hte first to finish.

It took several hours. Manually edited the registry and had malwarebytes launch via another executable. That got around the malware preventing it from running. Ran it, found three more trojans, cleaned and loaded AVG. Ran a test scan and it looked good and clean. Several other tools were used, but that's the condensed version.
