Nice job.

I stopped at "manually edited the registry"..............

So, I conclude that nobody but a professional can salvage such a situation.................the DB's are winning...............

My window using friends seem to keep their OS on a separate partition from their data and keep a good disc image of both on a separate drive. When the OS gets messed up, they just erase the entire partition and reload the entire system.

Even better if you can use a copy of Windows (if you must) in a Virtual machine and then surf the net with that - at the end of your session - or when you get problems just delete your virtual machine file... If you are smart you will have made a copy of your virtual machine file on a DVD or another part of your hard drive.

Have a look at

Yup, most mac users who need to run windows keep it in a VM where they can easily flush it.

While in this machine, I did notice that he had a restore partition. If it came down to it, could have backed up his docs, scanned them and restore the OS from the partition.

It works! Powerpig is a miracle worker! NFW would I have ever been able to do that. I was watching him click along for most of it and didn't understand what he was doing.

It takes some knowledge to do it the way powerpig did.

I don't have all the same knowledge, but I do have a good disk image available, and a bootable CD to let me restore it. If you value your time, then you should, too!

It worked great for me a few months back when a system hard drive failed. New hard drive in... restore image... back to work.

Delete your spyware programs and google Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft's free anti virus program. I've had better luck with it than pretty much anything. The new norton is great too if you want to pony up the bones.
