There are many ways to look at it. IMO, unless one is a vegan there is no reason to be against hunting. If one eats any sort of meat, then they are a 'hunter' in some form. It is just we have evolved to a point in our civilization where everyone does not need to do the hunting of animals. Instead we raise them in captivity to be easily harvested when the appropriate time arrives. So personally, I see no difference in taking an animal from 'the wild' to one on a farm. Some people choose to do the killing themselves occasionally. No difference to me whether they do it for themselves or the farmer/butcher does it for them.

Plus, how many Mercedes have been wrecked by deer? I also see it as every deer that is taken by a hunter may save the life of my Mercedes.

I can't find a good argument against any of that. I think I just have an emotional reaction to the death of such a beautiful animal. On the other hand, I'm sure that buck had a better life than was given to the chicken I had for lunch.

Speaking of deer populations, I live in a part of Northern Virginia that went from rural to suburban almost overnight. There is still a fair amount of habitat around us and we have a large deer population. We have a 12-acre field that will often have 20 deer grazing in the evening. For several years, we have been worried about the population exploding, but it doesn't seem to happen. The deer population around us is probably growing, but the herd looks nice and healthy. There is not much hunting around us - too crowded. Maybe there are enough deer getting hit by cars to keep things under control.

That sounds legit to me, although it also appears that the deer in that area are doing quite fine, if that buck is any indication. If hunting serves a purpose by controlling the herd population, then it's a good thing. I still wish that big buck was out there doing his thing.

Then you either got a bad cut of meat or haven't had a good cook. To cook it well, you have to realize at least 2 important things. First, where did you get the meat? In northern WI, the venison is a lot more gamey than in the southern end because up north, they eat more pine cones and wild stuff. In the southern areas, they have more crops to eat like soybeans and corn, etc, etc. Diet is a big factor. Second, what cut did you get? If you got a backstrap, it might be better. Also, did the cook prepare it properly? Did the cook take off all the fat? Yes, it takes a lot of prep work.

But would it be doing as good if we have removed the predators but the herd is the same size and expanding?
