Depends on what shore you mean. In many ways I'm way "off shore."

I believe in WI., if the waitstaffs' tips over the course of their shift and the "base" the restaurant pays doesn't add up and come out to equal the minimum Federal Wage rate, the restaurant is required to chip in the balance to bring the waitstaffs' Gross up to at least the minimum wage level.

So, if chitty waitperson is getting screwed by insulted patrons, the boss will probably hear about it from the customers, one way or another, but HE WILL SEE AND HEAR about the under-payment from said waitperson when they finally figure out their tips aren't cutting it...

If the restaurant owner doesn't sit down with said employee fast, he's getting wacked 2x's 'cause he is not only paying the pube a "base wage" but know he has the customer to worry about...

What didn't he like?
What happened with the service that required said patron to short-shrift the waitstaff?
What's being done to straighten out a situation between the customer and the waitstaff?

A happy and content waitperson is good for business in more ways than most people would realize...

If the WS is in a good mood, the customer will respond favorably (and hopefully, monetarily) at the end of the meal.

The owner won't have to pull funds from the take for the day to divy up among the staff...

Or, the WS screwed the pooch and owner now has the added task of trying to rebuild good-will between the customer and himself and restaurant, all the while haveing to chip in to bring that "kid's" pay up to Federal Minimum levels...

So, leaving a "sucky tip" reverberates throughout the business and affects more that just the jerk waitperson...EVERYONE suffers because one waitperson my have his/her head in a rectal/cranial invasive position.

And no one wants to work with, let alone, subsidize another co-worker that's busy dragging everyone else down to their level...

Offshore to whatever piece of land you're on. As in outsourcing jobs offshore.
