anybody else working/on call today?

I'm on call at the funeral home today, keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get called in because it's snowing and getting cold and I just don't want to leave the house. Anybody else on call or working today?

If I still had a job, I'd be working today, yesterday too.

I was thinking the same thing. Who's ever happy that the funeral director is on call?

The only people happy to see me are the ones who REALLY need me. I'm kind of like the plumber, nobody gives us a thought unless they have a real, immediate need, but when they need us, we have to come running!

Had to look after my cattle today... After gifts, I have to go fix a broken machine for tomorrow... Does that count??

I have a psychotic toddler and a 6month old who thinks she's a year old, already standing (balancing) and trying to walk. Those plus three large dogs are a full time job. Yesterday I went to the shop and made my wife's Christmas present and worked on cleaning out the storage unit that is becoming my personal space, I'll finish it tomorrow. There's a ton of stuff that has to go to DI and they're closed today.

I'll be working from 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. today. I also worked last night. Will work New Year's Eve and Day as well. Somebody has to make the newspaper, every day.

Got crews working in 5 schools

Consulting Engineer under Open Contract providing CM/Design Services to City Schools (all 1500 of them).

During the 10 day holiday, I have crews doing ACM removal , abatement, flashpatch and new VCT installation going on in 5 schools (my crews) plus the other 2 guys I work with each have 5 to 6 schools they cover.

My guys went in yesterday at 5 PM and set up the Abatement system (Showers, Air Evac, etc) and began sealing up rooms or hallways and tonight the demo guys hit it. Sunday we should be done with ACM removal/abatement and I'll do a walk thru and gove the go ahead for epoxy, flash patch and VCT installation and by next Sunday we should be ready for the kids on Monday 7 AM 1/4/2010.

This bunch is relatively easy, no major issues. Every once in a while we find a major problem (collapsed sub floor, termites, abandoned gas pipes, you name it) but (knock wood) I've always been able to open up on time.

Had a fire in a 1921 school last year on a Sat morning 6 AM. By 10 the Fire guys gave it back to us and I had 50 guys doing clean up, installing temporary doors in the stairs to close off the floor from the rest of the school, pulling down ceilings, skinning walls back to the terra cotta core, exposing all the floors and ceiling slabs and then I did the engineering inspection with the City DOB Chief and Board of Ed and OK'd structure...the BOE was finding class space for 300 kids and arrainging busses to take them from my school to whereever on Monday. We made it, I (and 50 of the hardest working micks in NYC) worked 48 straight hours but the school opened on time.

So yea, I'm on call...hopefully no one will pop a water pipe or an electric main or cause a fire-then I get to go the work.

No I don't get OT, just std Hourly in excess of base 40 hr salary.

woohoo, no calls today. Normally I like having the business but it was nice to just lounge around and do nothing all day.

Yeah ... A LOT of people who were working with me Christmas 2007 aren't here for Christmas 2009. Lots of empty desks.

Ahh, the smell of printing ink on Christmas day. I have been in the printing business for almost 30 years, so I know the feeling man. So in honor of a fellow printer, I will try to entertain you while you are at work. That's the least I can do for a fellow printer.
