They can make it tough on you.

In this county there was a fellow some years back who was a compulsive hoarder. He filled his house, yard and so forth with stuff he got for free from here and there. The county hounded him for a few years to clean up and he never did.....they even jailed him at least once.

Finally they sent out a front end loader and took the crap, and since the house had burned in the mean time (though it was repairable) they took the house too, loaded it all up on tri axles and hauled it all to the dump.

Then they charged the cost to his property taxes and in a couple of years had the property too.

And since he did not learn his lesson on that one, he filled another property up and a few years later the city did the same with it.

No, you don't want to sneak around building things without a permit.

Sorry, Hattie...

SIDING

Do they make a Hardi Board shake? At some point I'm going to have to replace the cedar shakes on my house and that might be a good way to go. I know they've approved the Hardi Board siding in a number of historic districts throughout the country, I'm sure there's one in my 'hood somewhere.

Edit: Ahhh, found it. It's Hardie Board. JamesHardie Siding Yes they do and they come in different colors as well. I'm definitely going to look into those when the time comes!

HardiPlank products are great. I believe it's called a cementous fiber product or something like that. It is actually made of cement with a fiber material like fiberglass running through it. It has some insulating value (unlike vinyl) does not dent, warp, or melt (like vinyl can), and it is very durable. It does have to be painted, but because it is not subject to expansion and contraction the way wood is, the paint stays on for a lot longer.
I can tell vinyl siding from the street. It just looks like plastic. HardiPlank can easily be mistaken for real wood. No, I don't sell this stuff, but I'd be proud to sell it.

I found the link (above) and now it looks like you can get them prefinished with a 15 year finish. One of the shake colors is damn close to the color we just painted our house, too.

My mother's house had HardiPlank on it and it was terrific. That's what sold me on it.

Yeah it does look good, and on my personal house I would probably use it.

Well I'm used to building to a price point to keep a margin.

Still I detest painting so I would have to hire someone to paint, which costs more than powerwashing vinyl.

I would think a minimum of 8 to 10K on a simple two car. Up from there depending on what you put in it.

I spent about 75 k on my garage in 1991 but it has space for five cars on two levels and a 900 sf one bedroom above it with a full kitchen, laundry room, cathedral ceilings and a nice balcony. I suppose it would be about double that now, maybe.
I'd love to see photos and any sketches you have of this building. I was thinking about building something similar for my aging parents to move into when they need to...

Helped friends replace their barn that collapsed a few years ago- the insurance basically paid for all the materials. It was a classic barn raising- his wife and her friends cooked all day, he and his friends built the walls and gable ends, and we all sat down to massive feast and kegs of good beer.
They did it again a couple of weeks later to get the roof and siding on.
Tons of fun- the two non drinkers ran the saws cutting everything to length, organized the piles of pieces, and the rest of us basically nailed a kit of parts together with the understanding that it was our own problem if we mashed the crap out of our fingers because we didnt know how to run a hammer.
