Are there really that many people out there that still don't have backups? I can't relax without three copies of everything in at least two different places.

Oh you'd be surprised. I see it almost every day. Usually we can recover the stuff, but if their drive is dead, too bad for them unless they want to spend $$$ on a data recovery service.

What I meant is that we will mount the drive on another machine, get all of their data, then wipe it. We do try to salvage as much as we can.

@#$%^&*(

Wiped and re-installed.

My daughter got the malware from drawings/pictures.

Due to the massive nature of the infections it was faster to wipe the machine and start fresh.

In the process I discovered the isp provided anti-virus was dead/expired, the isp changed to different programs.

FYI, 95% of the stuff out there gets past those free "ISP Provided" scanner programs. They are pretty much worthless and just slow down the machine.

x2 on everything you just said.

I work in educational IT which is just so much worse.

Running MWB is a surefire way to remove most malware, but seriously sometimes the only to be sure is to literally nuke it from low earth orbit (reformat).

On my own computer I backup regularly. On user's computers I instruct them to back up to their network share. My mantra is always, "We can't guarantee the safety of your data if you don't save onto the network."

Regardless I want to be 100% sure that there isn't any trace of the crap leftover and the only way is to re image the machine.

I know this is an old thread, but I didnt want to start a new one if I didnt have to. My laptop has a trojan. Something about RTHDBPL and WIN32.dll issues. Obvoiusly not a computer guy. My question is, can I take a flash drive and save my pics and music and just wipe the rest and reinstall windows 7 and reload all my pics and music, or will it reinfect my computer? I dont have much installed in the way of programs. Just Blackberry Desktop Manager, Blackberry Swiss Army Knife, and a few others I got for free. I can download those again. Thanks

Yes you can definitely do that. In fact, in many cases it is easier to wipe and reinstall if MWB can't handle the infection.

I posted this in another thread, but these are the three most common programs that get attacked by viruses because they have weird browser plugins.

1.Java runtime environment
2. Adobe Flash
3. Adobe PDF

There sadly isn't an alternative for the first two, so be vigilant in keeping them updated. For the third one run a program like FoxitPDF and disable the scripting engine.

Finally, run a browser that isn't Internet Explorer. Again I repeat run a browser that isn't internet explorer. Only use IE if a website has issues.

I recommend you download and install these two programs:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/upgrade.html
http://adblockplus.org/en/installation

Firefox is a great alternative browser. Adblock plus is also a great ad blocking extension for firefox. Rogue advertisements are the number one cause of drive by infections like Vundo (attacks the Java browser plugin). Adblock plus keeps them from loading and kills off banner ads as well like the google one I am seeing up top right now.

Plus it is all free. Who doesn't like free as in beer software!
