Smells??? What smells???

No smells here, 'cept for swamp gas in the salt water wetlands in the morning and the smell of fresh fish at the docks.
Surrounded by water, no industry. Clean air, clean water. Life is good.

My Printing and Sign Shop was right next to the Garrard County Stock Yards. I was happy when the closed it down. I was tired of people tracking cow $hit into my shop, and we don't even want to talk about the flies.

On final approach into Augusta, GA. in 1973 in a DC9, the cabin smelled like the toilet had backed-up with a sewer gas smell. Learned it was a paper mill with the associated smell one puts off.

South St Louis is overwhelmed by the smell of the Anheuser Busch brewery, you can smell the brewery for miles, which is great unless you're nursing a hangover, in which case it can be nauseating...smells like....beer.

Don't get me started about the aroma near the oil refineries in and around Hartford IL and the steel mill in Granite City IL. Between the smell and the nasty looking stuff coming out of the stacks that settles on cars and houses, it's not a place I'd want to live.

I do love spring rain on hot asphalt, one of my favorite smells, wherever I catch a whiff.

not called Winston Salem for nothing

I did some work in downtown Winston 20 years ago. RJR's tobacco mixing operations were nearby. Many days the whole downtown smelled like an open can of pipe tobacco.

In Northern Charlotte there is a big bakery. Go by early enough and you can smell the yeast / dough.

Going up to Wilkesboro you go through chicken raising country... pretty tough on some days.

Long time ago I just got a convertible in the Springtime, and was riding in the country to my assignment for the day. I think every farmer put manure out that night.

Lots of fun.

Another data point from me......

Childhood in scenic Chula Vista, California.

Directly west of the county dump, a chicken farm, and a rendering plant.

Mornings were great - ocean smells.

Afternoons sucked big time. Wind blowing across the county dump, the chicken farm, and the rendering plant.

Guy in my neighborhood drives to Nicaragua in an old schoolbus, fills it up with coffee beans and brings them back. Periodically he goes on a roasting spree and the whole neighborhood smells like roasting coffee.

Also I remember when I was a kid and we went on that one fateful family camping trip... up across the Straits of Mackinac. Wherever we were (Fayette..?) we pulled into town with my dad's 1982 Olds Delta 88 Diesel and a pop-up camper. Sulfur smell like you wouldn't believe. So my dad is all "yeah, there's a paper mill here, so you just need to get used to it".

We pulled in the campground and the smell got worse. "Dad, that really STINKS!"

"SHUT UP GODDAMMIT"

We got out and set up camp and I noticed that the car was smoking from under the hood.

Voltage regulator went in the alternator and fried BOTH batteries. They looked like basketballs...

Around here –
When it doesn’t smell like someone’s cooking out on the grill.
It smells like horse and cow poop mixed with burning jet-A and/or av-gas.

Tropicana has a plant in Bradenton. Smells like overly cooked oranges, and sometimes like rotten cooked oranges. Some people say it smells like that all the time - I notice it only occasionally when I drive up there.
Ludwigshafen Germany smells like canned bratwurst to me. They say it comes from the Chemical plants there.
The town I grew up in was small, and there was a farmer nearby ...occasionally I would smell their "Misthaufen" Manure pile. Oddly enough, I like the smell of a German manure pile better than the manure piles I have smelled in the states. Might be the feed.
Other than the manure pile, the town was recognized as a Luftkur ort. Air spa area, loosely translated.

With 5 inches of rain in the last week, around here it smells vaguely like my rotting pasture and wood stove smoke. Septic. God I wish it would dry out. I really need to get busy and dig out a sump in my goat loafing area so it'll drain better.

Paris smells like a 20 year old girl smoking an unfiltered cig? Only if she's smoking one of those nasty yellow Gauloise cigarettes and has been pi$$ing her panties for a month, assuming she wears any. Smelliest, dirtiest city in Europe with the possible exception of Naples in my opinion. Candy bar wrappers in the holy water fonts of Notre Dame, turds floating in the Seine. Ah....Pair-eee!

Give me the pungency of a Mexican open air market. Overripe fruit, cheese, meat, mesquite smoke and sweat. Now I'm hungry.
