You can pick up a laptop that is 3x as powerful as the ipad and has a 15" display for about $350.....or, a really nice netbook for even less.
iPad is a pointless product.

It's a pretty limited market compared to netbooks, probably only about 5 million this year. |

It is generally pretty hard to get through to Apple followers that they are getting ripped off.....
$2000 for a laptop? I work with a variety of computers on a daily basis (including macbooks) and while the macbook might be a bit "sleeker" than the average PC laptop....and perhaps a bit better build quality, it certainly does not justify a 3x higher price tag....especially when inside that case, it is just the same (except slower) than your average PC laptop. If you go shopping in the HP or Lenovo online store with $2k, you can get one heck of a computing machine. ![]() I very highly doubt they will sell 5 million iPads this year.....

Well, you should buy whatever computers you like, I'll keep my macs. IMO, $2k is a cheap price not to run a windows machines. If I need something faster, I'll just buy a better mac. You're comparing apples and oranges, they are not selling to the same market as the PC boxes. There is plenty of room in the market for both.
I don't know/care how many total ipads they will sell this year, but I think 5 million is a safe guess based on the first week (about half a million). I'll probably end up buying a few for the familly when the 3G model comes out, but they probably won't replace any computers. |

A mac is just linux done up in a pretty interface with a huge price tag..........
My main qualm is how Apple locks down their hardware. I would consider a macbook if I could buy it for $500 less with no O/S on it, so I can run Linux or Windows of my choice.

It's not Linux. it's Open BSD. I'm not a Mac fanboy by any means. As I said in an earlier post, I got it mainly for the ereader capability. You can run Windows on a Mac with no problem. I wasn't going to get one, but got a good deal and it's something new to play with. You can pick a macbook up for around $799 and pretty much load what you want.

I thought the point of e-readers was the electronic ink. Looks like paper, doesn't hurt your eyes like LCDs, and because the screen isn't being powered unless you turn the page, the battery lasts for weeks instead of hours. Did you look at any dedicated e-readers?
I remember Steve Jobs balked at e-readers... no one reads anymore! Amazon sold millions of their readers. I think the iPad would be pretty fun to play around with. But I gotta say it should have a friggin USB port. Come on Apple.

LOL, Jobs always says that no one will want a product right up to the day he releases that product, remember his video iPod comments. Whenever he says that, be sure that apple is planning on taking over that market segment soon.
I'm also curious to see how this book reader will compare to my e-ink reader. I like e-ink in decent light, but I tend to use the kindle reader on my iPhone in low light (reading in bed). I have found that you need to adjust the brightness of the iPhone reader to avoid eye strain, I assume the ipad will be similar. I think the e-ink readers will remain the choice of people who just want to read text, especially outside, while the ipad will be better for more complex content (magazines, newspapers with photos, text books with diagrams, etc.). I assume most people will end up with both types of devices eventually. Apple is not about to put a non-propritory port on an appliance type device. |

Well, I've had a bit of time with it today. I can almost touch type with it as long as it's propped up a bit. Posting on it now. I feel it's mostly a multimedia device. Works well playing back movies and shows from netflix as well as news, weather and sports from various sources. Great for browsing the web, but I couldn't see doing any major work on it. All in all, it's a big horking itouch, but more fun.

cheap? I bought my CAR for 150 dollars. No way im paying 300 bucks for that stupid apple tablet computer that doesn't even run windows. I bet any 200 dollar net-book would be a much better investment especially since most new cheap net-books are powerful enough to run windows seven. And the fact that their releasing the "more powerful 3g version" a few months later is obviously a marketing ploy and is very typical of Apple. Remember when they did the same thing with the iphone? And everyone got angry about it but they still fall into their stupid marketing traps. Take your money and buy some valve adjustment wrenches or something
