If it made phone calls I'd carry one just to be obnoxious.

The one at the end of the month is the 3G version. Otherwise, no difference. I already have a Verizon myfi, so I get my 3g through that. Basically, it's just an oversized iTouch. I got it mostly for the ebook features. I must admit, it really is nice for reading.

how is the typing? I would consider one if it could really replace a laptop, but since it has limited memory and does not support flash its a no go.

Typing is ok. The touch keyboard is very sensitive. So far, I'm not missing flash.

I believe it does support bluetooth keyboards, I assume there will be small keyboards available from someone (maybe built onto a case?) at some point.

I've also wondered if it could be used instead of a laptop in some cases. Specifically, I'm wondering if my daughter could carry one to school instead of her MacBook; it would be a lot easier to carry and cheaper to replace. I don't believe it could replace a primary computer.

Hopefully the ipad/iPhone will help kill flash sooner than later. I'm also concerned that 64GB won't be adequate, but I keep a copy of everything I really need to access in the cloud anyway.

Yes, I'm going to jailbreak it. I don't like being beholden to Apple or any company. It will work with bluetooth keyboards, but not the mouse. I've already loaded box.net to access my files from the "cloud". It's not a laptop replacement, but will do fine for everyday tasks. I can't use it for work though, as it can't accept a government cac card for secure login.

I'm thinking it will mostly be a 3G web browser and an easy way to carry documents to meetings. I'm typing this on a iPhone in a hotel in the middle of noplace TN without wi-fi, a larger screen would be nice.

Yup, but it's a cheap toy. I'm afraid that I will also end up buying them for my kids of I want to play with mine; my wife has adopted my iPod touch and my daughter ended up with one of my iPhones and one of my laptops, I can never get near my desktop computer.
