Just curious what his issue was, there are some pretty good tools to fix the file structure if it gets confused (I like diskwarrior because it completely rebuilds the directory). If I get those issues and they can't be easily resolved, I usually start to suspect a hardware issue with the drive. I normally upgrade either the drive or the computer before it ever needs to be re-formatted.
