Talking What a great day test driving old Mercedes

Now by chance today I just happened to be checking my local listings for fun and two amazing cars caught my attention. The first is a car that i've always regretted not buying. Nearly a year ago I went with my father to look at an amazing 300CD for my brother but the owner simply wanted too much for it. I checked today and its back and at a price that isn't far off from what we offered last year (Only 2,000 more miles since I drove it) My has father asked me a number of times if it was sold and we both assumed so. I will be telling him that its back during dinner tonight and i'm betting that there is a good chance that we'll be picking it up

Now you want to talk about good timing? Check out what I also saw had been newly listed and only 30 minutes away at a registered importer. (I simply couldn't resist a test drive and I just got home a little while ago....on a day with perfect weather to boot )

Its worth the scroll....

And the best part

Oh yeah, that's a 603 with only 81,000 miles on it

Those wheels are quite amusing, I must say! Haha.

Good luck with getting it. Surprised you would want your brother to have such a find and not keep it yourself.

But...ugh...if only it were a different color.

Try comparing the 300cd's gold paint to a new Camry's, you can't say anything bad about the gold on that 300cd afterward.

Well that's the thing....he's just looking for a reasonable offer, here is the story.

He is the only legal registered importer in the state of MA and he seems to work on a per order basis and not on speculation. He brought this truck over from Germany a few years ago for a repeat client who ended up not paying so he's willing to sell it and take a hit (He kept repeating, his loss, my gain) He said because of currency conversion and all the other factors that it cost him $38,000 to get it over here. Now if your savvy enough and prove to him that its NOT in mint condition and its really not that rare then you might be able to convince him to let it go for somewhere in the $20s.

I think the case would have to really be made that much newer trucks are available on the market and a LWB model is the most common. A two door Gwagen would be much rarer and more valuable (He seems to think that its the other way around) For example, this 1990 Cabrio with a leather interior was sold last year for $25,000, now that is a truly rare beast. W463s with diesels can be found, they just don't go for sale all that often.

One piece of advice though for anyone who buys it, put a turbo on it (Its a NA 603 and while i'm not a sporting driver even I feel that it needed more kick)

You would have to replace the engine to turbo charge it.

$20k+ is to much, I'd buy a 2000+ G for that.

Thats the problem with those old G's, IMHO its worth $10k-$15k to me.

Yeah i've been trying to look up information on what it would take to turbocharge it (Its still a 603 I just question how different the NA versions are to the turbocharged version) Sure it was fine once you got it going but man....I wouldn't want to have to pass someone on the highway with it . Either way he is probably going to want too much for it so i'm going to pass on this one (Plus I have my heart set on a SWB or Cabrio )

Either way though a few online posts in the right place and this truck will sell within no time at all.

The turbo charged diesels are different motors, for one they use different pistons.

Thats another downside its a dog, I rather have a 2002 with a 300hp V8 for the same money.

Damn that's a shame. I can't believe that MB didn't give Gs the Turbo charged 603 in the first place (Apparently they never made one with that engine, just a 606 turbo and a 3.5 603 turbo....but we all know why we should avoid the latter)

Looks like if I want a 90s G it will be a gasoline 6 cylinder.

seriously, you'd have one of the few SUVs that can return decent mileage regularly

Try driving a 5,000 pound truck with a NA 603 and then get back to me

Even off the line I wish it had a little more go and that is something that i've never said before.
